He earned Second Team All-Mt. Hood Conference honors his senior season. During his senior season, he had 35 receptions for 538 yards and scored eight touchdowns. Maughan averaged 15.4 yards per catch as a senior. He helped lead Oregon City High to the quarterfinals of the Oregon Class 6A State Playoffs, which is the largest classification in the state of Oregon. He played for high school head coach Randy Nyquist. Maughan was also recruited by Air Force.
