After some inconsistent performances early in the season, Paine flipped the switch late to place in his last two tournaments. He was second in the Rocky Mountain Open with three victories, and placed third in the U.S. Western National Open. He placed fourth in the UNC Old Chicago Open. He won three of four bouts to end his season. Overall, Paine went 16-12 in his redshirt year, with one pin, one technical fall and three major decisions.
