LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 10, 2019) – The Wyoming tennis team will begin the 2019 spring season on Saturday. The Cowgirls will face Oral Roberts and Louisiana Tech followed by a contest with Tulsa on Sunday. The first match is set for 8 a.m. MT followed by a 1 p.m. afternoon start, while the dual with the Golden Hurricane match is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
"The team has worked extremely hard the entire fall semester in all aspects of its games," head coach
Dean Clower said. "Going to Tulsa to start the season will give us a sense of where we are as a team which will be exciting to watch. We will definitely lean heavily on our seniors early this semester to lead us in all aspects on and off the court."
Wyoming competed in five tournaments during the fall and had some solid showings led by newcomers
Ana Royo and
Ana Fernandez. Royo went 9-6 overall in singles action which included a five match winning streak. Fernandez finished 8-8 overall. Freshman
Maria Oreshkina had a four match winning streak and went 6-5 overall followed by senior
Tessa van Der Ploeg with a 6-7 mark. Fellow freshman
Mihaela Kaftanova and
Ida Krause went 7-8 and 7-9, respectively.
The duo of Fernandez and Royo were 6-3 in doubles play while Kaftanova and Krause recorded a 4-0 mark. van Der Ploeg and fellow senior
Elisa Koonik were participants in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships during the fall and defeated Carr and Rice of Arkansas.
This will be the opening dual match of the season for Oral Roberts. This will be the sixth meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the all-time series 4-1. The last time the two teams met was January 18, 2016. The Cowgirls earned a 7-0 victory in Tulsa. The Golden Eagles are coached by Mark Milner who is in his eighth season.
La Tech will open up the weekend with a dual against Tulsa prior to taking on the Cowgirls. This will be the first meeting between the two programs. The Lady Techsters are coached by Amanda Stone who is in her third season with the program.
Tulsa will begin its dual season against La Tech and Oral Roberts Saturday and Sunday morning. The Golden Hurricane are 22
nd in the Oracle ITA team rankings. This will be the fifth meeting between the two schools. Tulsa leads the series 4-0. The last time the two teams met was April 8, 2000. The Golden Hurricane are coached by Dean Orford who is in his 14th season with the program.
