Biography

2018-19 (Senior):  John Murdock had an impressive summer leading into his senior season at Wyoming, and continued that success through the 2018 fall season.  Murdock captured the Wyoming State Open championship in the summer of 2018, becoming only the second amateur in the 62-year history of the event to win the title.  He finished as the First Alternate at the 2018 U.S. Amateur Qualifier played in Laramie, Wyo., and placed third at the 2018 Wyoming State Amateur Championship.  Murdock was one of three members of the state of Wyoming team that played in the Pacific Coast Amateur at The Olympic Club in San Francisco in July 2018.  During the 2018 fall season, Murdock posted three Top 25 finishes.  He placed sixth at the University of Colorado Mark Simpson Invitational, finished 12th at the University of Denver Paintbrush Invite and placed 17th at the Air Force Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational.  In February of 2019, Murdock was one of only 12 collegiate golfers  invited to play in the 2019 Genesis Open Collegiate Showcase.  He finished the fall season with a stroke average of 72.50.

2017-18 (Junior):  Murdock enjoyed an outstanding junior season in 2017-18.  He posted six Top 25 finishes, including winning his first college tournament at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational.  He placed second at the Colorado State Ram Masters Invitational, third at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, fourth at the Wyoming Southern Dunes Invitational, fifth at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invite and 25th at the Mountain West Conference Championship.  Murdock earned Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).  He was also a Mountain West Academic All-Conference honoree.  He concluded the season with a 71.58 stroke average, which tied him for the best scoring average on the Cowboy team for the 2017-18 season with teammate Drew McCullough.

2016-17 (Sophomore): Murdock played 30 rounds in 10 tournaments for Wyoming, averaging 74.63 strokes per round for a solid improvement from his freshman campaign.  His best finish came at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational for the second straight year, where he posted his first career top-20 finish, tying 19th with a score of 214 (-2).  Murdock’s low round of the season was 70 (-2), which he recorded three times – at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, at the Arizona National Invitational Tournament and at the MW Championship, where he tied for 42nd after recording a total score of 224 (+8).  Murdock received Academic All-Mountain West and MW Scholar Athlete honors.

2015-16 (Freshman): He played 21 rounds for UW during his freshman campaign.  He closed out his first year with a 76.14 stroke average.  Murdock recorded his best finish at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, tying for 32nd.  He shot a three-round total of 220 (+10), at the Simpson before recording a 232 (+16) for a share of 38th at the Cowboys’ Southern Dunes tournament.  In the spring, Murdock had a 223 (+7) at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic.  He tied for 47th at the BYU Cougar Classic with a 225 (+9).  Murdock garnered Academic All-Mountain West and MW Scholar Athlete honors for his work in the classroom.

High School: Murdock joined the Cowboys after a decorated career at Laramie High School under head coach Kurk Aegerter.  He was a four-time All-State selection.  Murdock finished second at the Wyoming State Championship as a senior, and won the Eastern Conference individual championship.  Murdock earned All-Conference honors four straight seasons.  He also excelled in the classroom as a member of the National Honor Society, and was a dedicated volunteer for the First Tee of Wyoming.

Personal: Murdock is the son of John Murdock III and Juliette Murdock.  He is majoring in management at the University of Wyoming.
