OREM, Utah (1/10/26) – University of Wyoming wrestling head coach
Mark Branch was eager to return to dual action Saturday. He wanted his team to grow closer and use one another to build momentum throughout a competition, and that's precisely what they did at Utah Valley.
The Cowboys won eight of 10 bouts and scored multiple upsets en route to a 29-6 win inside Lockhart Arena. The victory moves the Pokes to 3-3 on the season and 2-0 in Big 12 play, while the loss drops the Wolverines to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in league.
"The dual didn't start very well for us," head coach
Mark Branch said. "
Gunner Henry really turned it around. He brought a lot of inspiration, and that's what we talked about. In the dual setting, you can feed off stuff like that, and you saw what it did. It sparked everybody.
Isaiah Harrison brought a lot of inspiration, as well, and that just carried us. It was awesome."
Isaiah Harrison (125) received his first-career dual start Saturday, and his upset win essentially locked up the dual. He rallied, scoring a takedown in the final 10 seconds, to defeat No. 27 Bridger Ricks via decision, 6-4.
No. 26
Gabe Willochell (149) laid claim to the other upset. He capped the dual with a dominating 16-1 technical fall of No. 10 David Evans.
"Gabe capped the dual off with a dominating win over a highly-ranked guy," Branch said. "That put a lot of smiles on our faces in the locker room."
The competition began Saturday with No. 31
Jared Hill (157) earning a 4-1 decision win over Mark Takara. The Wolverines knotted the score at 3-3 following a Zyon Trujillo (165) 4-2 decision win over
Sloan Swan.
It was all Cowboys from then on out. No. 28
Riley Davis (174) and No. 12
Eddie Neitenbach (184) each logged decision wins over Hudson Rogers and Caleb Uhlenhopp, respectively.
Gunner Henry (197), much like Harrison, got his first-career dual start and did not disappoint. He authoritatively defeated Christian Slack via technical fall, 21-6.
No. 9
Christian Carroll (HWT) made it back-to-back bonus-point wins. He beat Jack Forbes via major decision, 16-5.
Following Harrison, and very similar to Harrison's match,
Luke Willochell (133) rallied for a 7-5 decision win over Geronimo Rivera. No. 18 Haiden Drury (141) owned the last of Utah Valley's two wins, downing
John Alden via decision, 5-0.
Wyoming returns home for its first dual inside the UniWyo Sports Complex this season. The Cowboys host No. 8 South Dakota State on Jan. 18 at 1 p.m.
