San Diego, Calif. (March 6, 2023) -- A second round 284 (-4) moved the Wyoming Cowboys up five spots in the team standings at the conclusion of day one of the R.E.L. Lamkin San Diego Classic being played at the San Diego Country Club. Wyoming is tied with San Francisco for eighth place in the field of 15 teams. Senior
Kirby Coe-Kirkham led the Cowboys with a 36-hole total of 140 (-4), including a second round 67 (-5). Coe-Kirkham is tied for seventh place, only five shots out of the tournament lead.
"It was a tough first round, but we bounced back and played well in the second round," said
Joe Jensen, Wyoming Director of Golf. "Kirby (Coe-Kirkham) played really well today, and as a team we moved up five spots from the first round to the second round.
"This is a really nice event and a really good field of teams. We want to take the momentum we had this afternoon and carry that into Tuesday's final round."
Cowboy
Jaren Calkins is tied for 26th at 145 (+1). The other three UW team members competing are:
Kristof Panke, tied for 53rd at 148 (+4);
Tyler Severin, in 59th place at 149 (+5); and
Cade McLaughlin, tied for 67th at 151 (+7). Wyoming's
Patrick Azevedo and
Jimmy Dales competed as individuals and are tied for 33rd and 40th, respectively. Azevedo shot a 146 (+2), and Dales is one shot back of his teammate at 147 (+3).
Host San Diego State is leading the team competition. The Aztecs posted a score of 560 (-16) and are four strokes ahead of New Mexico. The Lobos sit at 564 (-12). Peter Hruby of Washington and Christoph Bleier of Colorado State share the individual lead at 135 (-9).
The 15-team field will tee off in the third and final round Tuesday morning beginning at 8 a.m., Pacific Time. Wyoming will be paired in a threesome with California and San Francisco.
The R.E.L. Lamkin San Diego Classic is being hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif. The San Diego Country Club course measures 7,033 yards and plays to a par of 72.
