Palm Desert, Calif. (Feb. 10, 2023) -- The Wyoming Cowboy Golf team will play for third place in the field of eight men's golf programs on Saturday at the Second Annual Wyoming Desert Match Play being held at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. The No. 4 seeded Cowboys will play No. 3 seed San Francisco for third place.
In Wyoming's opening round match, the No. 4 seeded Cowboys defeated No. 5 seed Seattle 5-1-0. The five Cowboys who won their individual matches over the Redhawks were:
Kirby Coe-Kirkham, who won 1 UP;
Jaren Calkins won 3&2;
Patrick Azevedo won 3&2;
Jimmy Dales won 3&2; and
Kristof Panke won 6&4.
Cade McLaughlin lost his first round match 3&1. UW's win in the first round advanced the Cowboys to the Championship Bracket.
In their Championship Bracket match Friday afternoon, the Pokes faced off against No. 1 seeded Colorado. Wyoming would lose an extremely close match by a score of 3-1-2. UW sophomore Azevedo was the Cowboys' one individual to capture his match by a score of 1 UP. Two other Cowboy sophomores, Calkins and McLaughlin, tied their matches. Three Pokes lost in their individual matches. Those three were senior Coe-Kirkham, losing 5&4; junior Dales, losing 2&1; and sophomore Panke, losing 2&1.
On Friday, Azevedo was the lone Cowboy to win both of his individual matches. Calkins won one match and tied one. Coe-Kirkam, Dales and Panke each won one match and lost one. McLaughlin tied one match and lost one.
"It was a good first day," said
Joe Jensen, UW Director of Golf and Head Men's Golf Coach. "We obviously won our first match and lost our second. The match against CU was close all afternoon. We were able to win one of those individual matches and tied two. We lost two others by scores of 2&1, so that match could have swung either way. In the loss to CU, the kids still played hard.
"It was two good matches, really good experience for our guys and a lot of good things for our first time out this spring. We get another opportunity to compete against a really good team in San Francisco tomorrow."
The Wyoming Desert Match Play is being played on the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. The course measures 7,305 yards.
