Pueblo, Colo. - The Wyoming Track and Field squad got their outdoor season underway this weekend at the Spank Blasing Invite hosted by CSU-Pueblo. The Cowboys and Cowgirls started the outdoor season strong winning multiple events while also having multiple all-time top ten performances.
"It was a really good all-around meet from the Cowboys and Cowgirls. We had a really nice day weather wise and the team took advantage of the favorable conditions" Head Track and Field Coach
Bryan Berryhill said, "We are off to a good start but there's still a lot of work that needs to be done so we can be our best in May at the MWC Championships"
DISTANCE
Oisin O'Gailin got the day off to strong start for the Cowboys finishing second in the 1500M with a time of 3:50.82 while
Asefa Wetzel also finished in the top ten placing eighth with a time of 3:59.87. For the Cowgirls,
Katelyn Mitchem also posted a second-place finish clocking a time of 4:30.08, which converts to 4:24.40 putting her in third on the UW all-time top 10 list in the event.
Kaylee Kearse finished just behind her in sixth with a time of 4:40.27.
Mason Norman put together an outstanding performance in the men's 5000M winning the event with a time of 14:29.66 which converts to 14:07.47 good enough for ninth all-time. Gus McIntyre and
Seth Bruxvoort also finished in the top ten coming in at sixth and seventh respectively. On the women's side,
Leah Christians completed the event sweep for Wyoming clocking a time of 16:58.71 to win the race. Her time converts to 16:32.72 which is good for third all-time in Program history.
Kylie Simshauser finished in second with a time of 17:48.85.
Abigail Whitman rounded out the all Wyoming top three taking third with a time of 18:03.08. .
Josh Rodgers ran to a podium finish in the men's 3000M Steeplechase taking third with a time of 9:37.87.
Anna Spear matched that finish on the women's side crossing the line at 11:29.15 to earn third as well. Additionally, Spear's time converts to 11:12.78 which puts her in eighth all-time in Cowgirl history.
In the 800M
Joseph Rodgers posted a top five finish crossing the line in fourth with a time of 1:52.05.
"We were really happy with the distance crew and their overall performance today." Assistant Coach
Scott Dahlberg said, "For an opening meet, after a couple of big weeks of training, there were some very encouraging races."
JUMPS
Kareem Mersal got his outdoor season started in style picking up an impressive win in the men's long jump recording a winning leap of 24-11.
Hunter Brown also turned in a solid performance finishing third with a leap of 24-3.
Another event win came for Wyoming in the women's triple jump where
Aumni Ashby recorded a leap of 39-10 top claim first place. For the Cowboys,
Jefferson Danso took fifth with a leap of 47-4.25 with
Kaliff Guevara taking tenth with a leap of 45-0.25.
In the men's high jump
Samuel Schneider led the Pokes clearing 6-6.75 to finish in fourth.
Sage Coventry and
Pete Mead tied for sixth after both clearing 6-2.75 while Brown finished in eighth.
In the women's pole vault,
Kayla Stibley took 11
th after clearing 11-1.75. On the men's side
Bryson Engebretsen matched that finish himself clearing 13-5.25.
THROWS
Opening the meet Friday, the Cowgirl throwers got off to a strong start led by
Mary Carbee who took second in the hammer throw with a toss of 183-04 while
Addison Henry finished fourth with a best throw of 170-08. On the men's side
Daniel Carrillo went 155-02 which earned him a tenth-place finish.
Also competing on Friday,
Sage Coventry took third place in the men's javelin throw with a mark of 172-04.
Bryson Engebretsen also competed in the event finishing in 13
th.
Nathan Reid came up big on Saturday winning the men's discus throw going 180-09 to win his first event of the outdoor season and move him into tenth on the UW all-time top ten list in the discus. Fellow Cowboy
Mikey DeRock finished sixth with a throw of 161-02. On the women's side the duo of
Cosette Stellern and Addison henry finished fourth and sixth with throws of 146-05 and 136-01 respectively.
Logan DeRock finished just behind them in ninth.
Henry followed that up by taking second in the women's shot put with a toss of 48-04 while
Logan DeRock also posted another top ten finish, placing tenth with a mark of 41-03. On the men's side
Mikey DeRock led the way finishing seventh with a throw of 52-10.25 while Reid and
Daniel Carrillo finished in 10
th and 11
th.
SPRINTS
Jahiem Ferguson got his outdoor season started with a statement winning the 400M hurdles with a time of 53.46 finishing almost two seconds ahead of the second-place runner.
Caige McComb also finished in the top ten taking eighth with a time of 58.49. On the women's side the duo of
Jenae Ramirez and
Peri Hennigar finished third and fourth with times of 1:06.23 and 1:07.52 respectively.
In the men's 110M hurdles the duo of McComb and Coventry both finished inside the top ten taking eighth and tenth with times of 15.26 and 15.41 respectively.
Darius Wiggins had a solid performance in the men's 400M crossing the line at 48.77 to finish in second while
Tyler Dahl took tenth with a time of 51.55. For the Cowgirls,
Kiona Gibbs was the top finisher in the 400M taking 17
th with a time of 1:00.19.
In the men's 200M
Jaymison Cox finished inside the top 10 taking ninth with a time of 21.71 while Wiggins finished in 13
th.
