Cowgirl Golf to Host Wyoming Cowgirl Classic

LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 3, 2021) – The Wyoming women's golf team will resume its spring season on Monday by hosting the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic. The two-day tournament will be held at the AK-Chin Southern Dunes Course in Maricopa, Ariz.
 
"We are thrilled to be returning to Ak Chin Southern Dunes as it has been two years for us," head coach Josey Stender said. "The staff does a fantastic job with all of the details in addition to the championship level course, we are very privileged and appreciative to host with them."

This week's tournament is set up on the Par-72, 6,131-yard AK-Chin Southern Dunes. Play is scheduled to at 7:30 a.m. on Monday with 36 holes of play. The third round is also scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.  Both days include shotgun starts.

"We have had an up and down spring season where we haven't just clicked all at the same time as a team," she added. "They have been putting in a tremendous amount of work to be competitively prepared and our "home" event always has a level of extra pride to it. They know we have half our season left and we have the talent and depth to be consistently competitive, it will just come down to their ability to remain confident in their execution."   

Along with the Cowgirls, the 20-Team Tournament field features Boise State, CSU Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana State, Nevada, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Santa Clara, Seattle, South Dakota State, Southern Utah and UTEP.
 
The last time Wyoming competed in the event was 2019 when UW closed out the event out with a team score of 304 (+16) final round. The Cowgirls finished 11th with a three-day total of 906 (+42). UTEP took home the team title with a 19-over 883 while New Mexico State's Suthavee Chanachai won the individual title with an 8-under 208.
 
The Cowgirls were led by Sargent who finished her tournament with a 76 in the final round to tie for 23rd overall with an 8-over 226 (77-76-73). Former Cowgirls Kaylee and Megan Knadler each tied for 32rd for the weekend. Megan Knadler wrapped up the event at 9-over with a three round total of 226. Kaylee Knadler shot a one-over 73 in her final round to card a 226 which was her season-best.
 
Wyoming is coming off a season-best seventh place finish at the BYU Spring Classic. In a weather shortened two rounds, the Cowgirls shot a 38-over (614).  Nguyen was the top finisher with a combined two day score of 157 (+13) to place 43rd.
