LARAMIE, Wyo. (Feb. 12, 2021) – The Wyoming wrestling squad will be on the road this weekend as they head to Stillwater, Okla. for the Cowboy Challenge Tournament hosted by No. 6 Oklahoma State. Also Competing at the event will be West Virginia and No. 5 Missouri. Wrestling is set to begin at 10 a.m. MT with the finals set to start at 3 p.m. MT.
"This will be our toughest test of the season. We have faced West Virginia, and Missouri already this season and Oklahoma State is again one of the top teams in the nation." Head Coach
Mark Branch Said "I love that we will be in more of a tournament format before we turn our focus to the Big 12's. This will really help get our starter's in tune with the individual advancement model."
The competition will consist of an eight-man bracket at each weight class with school having up to two wrestlers at each weight. This tournament will be the first individual bracketed tournament the Cowboys have wrestled in since March 8, 2020 when they competed at the Big 12 championships.
Last time out, Wyoming hosted both West Virginia and No. 8 Arizona State in the UniWyo Sports Complex. The pokes picked up a big 21-12 win over West Virginia highlighted by
Stephen Buchanan knocking off No. 1 Ranked Noah Adams. Buchanan was named Big 12 wrestler of the week for his victory. Both
Hayden Hastings and
Tate Samuelson went 2-0 on the day with both wrestlers also winning one match by pin.
Wyoming has also already competed once against No. 5 Missouri this season losing 29-3. Since that early season meeting Missouri has improved to 10-0 on the season boasting wins over No. 13 Iowa State and No. 15 Northern Iowa. In their last dual Missouri beat SIUE, 35-3.
Host school No. 6 Oklahoma State has also posted an undefeated record this season so far going 9-0 in their duals. Oklahoma State also holds wins over Iowa State, Northern Iowa and Oklahoma. In their last dual OSU had a 45-0 shutout victory over Arkansas Little Rock.
Sunday's tournament will have live stats available on TrackWrestling. The quarterfinals and semifinals will not be streamed, but the finals will be streamed on Big 12 now on ESPN+.
