Power Meet Starts off Wyoming Track & Field Indoor Season

LARAMIE, Wyo. — The University of Wyoming Track & Field team kicked off the Indoor season today at the Hager-LeBar Track at War Memorial Fieldhouse today on Friday December 10th. 

The meet which featured full squads from Wyoming and Colorado State University was the first competition for the Pokes since last spring. 

THROWS 

Kicked things off with the women's Weight Throw with Cowgirl Addison Henry pacing the way for the Pokes with a second place finish and a mark of 55-0.75. On the men's side Daniel Carrillo matched Henry and took second for the Cowboys with with a throw of 59-0.50. 

Finishing up the Throws Henry and Cosette Stellern went three-four in the Shot Put for the final women's event of the afternoon. Henry went 47-5 while Stellern hit a mark of 44-9.75. For the Cowboys Mikey DeRock took second place in the event with a push of 54-4. 

Said Throws Coach Carrie Lane. "With this early meet, it was nice to see lifetime bests (indoor and outdoor marks) from Cosette Stellern (SP), Mikey DeRock (SP), and Danny Carrillo (WT).  We had some rust to shake off to get back to competing but we're looking forward to fine tuning for the meets after break."

SPRINTS

Shayla Howell and Carter Wilkerson both took first in the 55M dash leading the way for the Cowboys and Cowgirls. Howell went 7.09 and Wilkerson went 6.38 in his first race in the Brown & Gold. 

Six Cowgirls went in the 400 meters today with Jasmyne Cooper taking the top spot with a 59.48. Jenea Ramirez and Camille Foster rounded out the top three for the women. Just two competed on the men's side with Cowboys Darius Wiggins and Joseph Rogers finishing with times of 51.98 and 52.59 in that order. 

In the 55M Hurdles Gabby Drube and Taylor Gardner took second and third in the event with times of 8.65 and 8.69. Jaheim Ferguson went 7.97 for the men to take third. 

The final event of the evening the Cowgirls and Cowboys both ran a 4x400 Relay individually. The Cowgirls team consisting of Camille Foster, Gabrielle Drube, Emmy Johnson and Caroline Larsson went 4:10.29 while the Cowboys four of Tyler Dahl, Jaheim Ferguson, Carson Kaminski and Jaymison Cox ran a time of 3:29.13. 

Said Sprints/Hurdles Coach Ben Santos. "I thought the 2022 track and field campaign is off to a solid start for the Cowboy and Cowgirl sprints and hurdles.  We had a great showing for some new faces and our returners dedication to the process is definitely showing through.  I've been extremely pleased with our fall season, the toughness we have had and Im excited to see the group stay the course and continue to improve."

JUMPS 

It was a one-two finish for the Cowgirls in the Long Jump as Shayla Howell and Sadie McMullen started their seasons off strong. Howell went 20-1.5 and McMullen went 19-9.75 to get the win against their foes from Colorado State. Hunter Brown matched Howell with a win on the men's side with Alec Richardson taking third. Brown hit his mark of 23-9 while Richardson went 22-7. 

It was all Cowboys and Cowgirls competing in the Triple Jump. Aumni Ashby went 39-10.5 while Kaliff Guevara and Jefferson Danso competed for the men with marks of 47-9 and 45-8. 

In the first High Jump of the season Samuel Schneider and Pete Mead were the only two participants. Schneider went 6-6 while Mead went 6-4. 

Kayla Stibley placed the highest for the Cowgirls in the Pole Vault with Aubry Sanchez and Madison Friend out there competing as well. Stibley went 11-3.75 to notch third place. 

Said Associate Head Coach Quincy Howe. "Great start to our 2022 campaign, the jumpers and multis came out aggressive and deliberate with everything they wanted to get done today and I was pleased with their execution across the board. I am looking forward to seeing how the heptathletes end the weekend tomorrow and for the entire group to continue their progress into the belly of our season."

HEPTATHLON

Competition in the Heptathlon today began at 10:20AM with the 55M dash as six student-athletes competed in the event. Three from Wyoming and three from Colorado State. Sage Coventry, Bryson Engebretsen and Aiden Morris are the three Cowboys vying in the two-day competition with Coventry leading the way for the Cowboys after day one. 

Coventry ran a 6.75 in the 55M dash, went 22-05 in the Long Jump, threw 41-11.25 in the Shot Put and went 6-8.25 in the High Jump to end the day in first among the six competitors with 3060 points. Engebretsen and Morris are in fifth and sixth respectively. 

The Cowboys and Rams will pick things back up tomorrow at 10:30AM to finish up the Heptathlon starting with the 60M Hurdles and followed by the Pole Vault and 1000M race to cap things off.
