Colorado Springs, Colo. — The University of Wyoming Track & Field teams wrapped up day two of the Air Force Invitational on Friday afternoon at the Cadet Field House in Colorado Springs, Colo., with the Cowboys in first place with 41 team points.
Two Cowboys entered the UW record books while three Cowboys placed in their respective events, with one first place and two second place finishes.
Hap Frketich & Kirk Unland went one-two in the men's Weight Throw earning a combined 18 points for the Cowboys. Frketich put himself into 10th place in the UW record books with the winning throw of 67'1.25", taking over the spot held by Unland.
On the women's side of the Weight Throw, Mary Carbee notched a personal best in the event with mark of 56'3", besting her previous mark of 50'5.25' by 6'0.75"! Carbee finished sixth in the event while teammate Addison Henry had a top-10 finish.
"It was a solid opener for both men," said Assistant Coach Carrie Lane, "We are grateful that we have a chance to compete this indoor season. They have worked incredibly hard since March of last year when we were shut down. Their marks show their steady progress but also indicate there is more to come from both of them."
Bryson Engebretson with a new high of 4,707 points in the Heptathlon to replace his previous best of 4,604 in the UW indoor record books for the eighth spot. Engebretson posted personal bests in the Pole Vault (14'1.25"), Long Jump (21'1.25") and Shot Put (37'0.50") on his way to a fifth-place finish.
In the second-to-last event of the day the Cowboys took sole possession of first place as William Nolan secured second place in the Long Jump with a mark of 23'8.25" and freshman Kareem Mersal picked up a fourth place finish with a jump of 23'5.25" in his first event as a Cowboy.
Sadie McMullen, the freshman from Morrison, Colo., competing in her first event as a Cowgirl took fourth place in the women's long jump with a mark of 18'8.50".
The Cowgirls finished day two with eight team points and sit in seventh place. Competition resumes on Saturday for the final day of action, beginning at 9 am.
