LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 21, 2021) – The Wyoming Wrestling team will be on the road again this Saturday when they travel Utah Valley for a round robin tournament. Wyoming, Utah Valley and No.8 Arizona State will compete in a three-team round robin competition. The event is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. MT and will be wrestled straight through to completion.
"This is a unique and exciting event with both Utah Valley and Arizona State. It's a great way to see 2 teams at once and get matches with a Top 10 team from the Pac-12 along with a very tough conference foe." Head Coach
Mark Branch said "I'm also excited that our #2's will be able to participate and get match experience as well as a chance to stake their claim as the #1 guy. We have to wrestle better than we did last weekend because our opportunities are limited and there is a sense of urgency with our season. We have to be more confident, more aggressive, and focus only on performance. I like the test this event provides to do those things."
On Saturday, Wyoming and Utah Valley will both have up to three wrestlers competing at each weight. Arizona State is sending a select group of five wrestlers. After competing in a round robin format a champion will be named at each weight class at the end of the day.
Last time out a group of Cowboys competed in individual matches hosted by Air Force. The individual competition was highlighted by a trio of Cowboys going 3-0 on the day.
Darren Green,
Cole Moody and
Chase Zollmann all racked up three wins. For Moody, he moved to 6-1 on the season with three bonus point wins.
Brian Andrews and
Job Greenwood were both also undefeated at the event.
No.8 Arizona State has had a solid start to the season holding a dual record of 2-0 picking up big wins over Arkansas Little Rock and No.20 Oklahoma. Utah Valley is 1-1 on the season with a win over California Baptist. UVU started their season by competing at the Cal Poly Round Robin Tournament, where they had six champions.
