Provo, Utah. (April 20, 2019) -- Led by a career-best finish from freshman
Tyler Severin, the Wyoming Cowboys held on to eighth place at the BYU PING Cougar Classic on Saturday. Severin fired a final round 70 (-2) to conclude the tournament with a 54-hole total of 214 (-2) and tie for 18th place. Wyoming finished the tournament with a final team score of 871 (+7). Junior
Dan Starzinski finished one stroke back of Severin at 215 (-1) and tied for 22nd.
For Severin it was not only his best collegiate tournament finish, but he also shot the best tournament score of his young career. His 214 (-2) for the tournament was the first time the freshman from Johnstown, Colo., had completed a tournament under par, and it marked the second Top 25 finish of his freshman season. His final round of two-under par 70 saw the freshman birdie three of his final six holes (the 13th, 16th and 17th) and eagle the 15th. Severin's previous best tournament finish and score were at the Air Force Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational during the fall season, where he shot a 218 (+2) to tie for 25th place.
Starzinski's 22nd-place showing at 215 (-1) gave him his eighth Top 25 finish in 12 tournaments this season. Senior
John Murdock tied for 30th at 217 (+1), and freshman
Kirby Coe-Kirkham tied for 67th at 226 (+10). Sophomore
Carl Underwood was the fifth Cowboy who competed as part of the team. Underwood ended the tournament at 237 (+21), placing 90th.
Two Cowboys competed as individuals at the BYU PING Cougar Classic. Redshirt freshman
Jared Edeen and freshman
Jimmy Dales. Edeen, like Severin, posted the lowest tournament score of his career and his highest tournament finish. Edeen tied for 30th with Murdock at 217 (+1). Edeen's previous low tournament score was a 223 (+7) at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on April 8-9. Edeen's best tournament finish prior to Saturday was a 67th-place showing at the Denver Paintbrush Invitational during the fall season. Dales shot a 224 (+8) at the BYU Cougar Classic to tie for 60th.
"I'm happy for Tyler (Severin). He played well today, and played well particularly late in the round," said
Joe Jensen, UW Director of Golf. "He didn't get off to a great start, but I was really proud of the way he played on the back nine. It was really a teaching moment for our young guys. You just have to hang in there for the entire 18 holes. I think it was good for all our young guys to see one of them play really well.
"Dan (Starkzinski) and John (Murdock) couldn't get anything going today. Of course Dan was trying to win a golf tournament as he was tied for fifth going into the final round, but when you press sometimes you don't get the results you want.
"Overall, it was a good experience for all of our guys. I like the work that our individuals (
Jared Edeen and
Jimmy Dales) put in. It was one of Jared's (Edeen) best tournaments. I like a lot of what we did at times with a really young group. We just weren't able to put any kind of run together today."
The BYU PING Cougar Classic was played on the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. Riverside played to a par of 72 and measured 7,142 yards.
Next up for the Cowboys will be the Mountain West Conference Championship on Friday-Sunday, April 26-28. The MW Championship will be played on the OMNI Tucson National in Tucson, Ariz.
