ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Junior
Ja'la Henderson became Wyoming's first women's triple jump winner in MW indoor championship history, tying her own school record with a mark of 42 feet, 11 inches on Saturday as the 2018 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships came to a close in Albuquerque.
Jerayah Davis,
William Nolan and
Jackson Wood also collected top-three finishes in their respective events on the final day of the conference championship meet.
Henderson put together an impressive series of jumps, recording her best mark on her third attempt of the day to pull ahead of San José State's Nicole Iloanya. Henderson's triple jump crown is a particularly impressive feat considering the Dayton, Ohio native competed in the event for the first time in her collegiate career just six weeks ago. The conference title is the second of her career, as she was the 2016 MW indoor champion in the long jump. Henderson is the first Cowgirl to record top-three finishes in both jumps events at the same MW indoor championship meet.
"Ja'la (Henderson) went out there and did what she's been doing all year. She's just in the zone right now," UW head coach
Bryan Berryhill said on Saturday. "She's doing everything right, and it shows. Triple jump is not an easy event to pick up. It's not natural. To see her do that is impressive, but it's no coincidence. She's focused right now and doing what she needs to be doing."
Nolan excelled for Wyoming in the men's triple jump, recording a massive personal best of 49-6.5 to take second place behind Air Force senior John Reynolds. With Nolan's runner-up triple jump performance after a fourth-place effort in the long jump on Friday, a Cowboy jumper has placed in the top five of both jumps events at four straight MW indoor championships.
Davis, who entered Saturday's final of the women's 60 meters with the second-fastest time in the preliminary, clocked a time of 7.35 seconds in the final to finish as the runner-up in the event for the third consecutive year. In the men's 60-meter final, sophomore
Sam Kirkeide scored two points for the Cowboys with a seventh-place finish in 7.07.
Wood had the best performance of his collegiate career in the men's 400-meter final, checking in at 48.10 seconds for third place after he posted the fifth-best time in the prelims. His time is fourth on the UW all-time list for the event and the fastest for a Cowboy since 2010.
"Jackson ran a very poised 400 today," Berryhill said. "I thought he was very much poised and in control."
Senior
Kerry White ran an impressive race in the women's 800-meter final, clipping two competitors at the finish line for a fourth-place finish. White clocked an altitude-adjusted time of 2:11.46, a season-best. In the men's 800-meter final,
Ricky Faure placed seventh with a converted 1:52.41. Faure also ran a leg on Wyoming's 4x400-meter relay team along with
Jacob Harthun,
Kevin Blackett and
Bryce Ailshie. The Cowboys took fourth in the relay, clocking 3:19.17.
Senior
Jonah Henry placed 12
th in a field of 36 runners in the men's 3,000 meters, clocking the No. 7 time on the UW all-time list with a converted 8:16.83.
Wyoming was strong in the hurdles events, as freshman
McCade Johnson earned a sixth-place finish in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.32. Meanwhile, senior
Heidi Pfoor took seventh in the women's 60-meter hurdles, clocking 8.90.
Senior
Garrett Lynch finished his indoor career by scoring a point for the Cowboys with an eighth-place finish in the men's shot put, tossing 51-7. On the women's side of the event, freshman
Addison Henry threw 46-3.5 for ninth place while senior
Hannah Carr tossed 45-7.25 for 10
th place. Sophomore
Kyle Pollock was another point-scorer for the Cowboys, taking eighth place in the high jump with an indoor personal record of 6-5.
The Cowgirls and Cowboys each notched 41 points as a team, giving Wyoming a sixth-place finish on the men's side and a ninth-place finish on the women's side.
"As a team, we have higher expectations than how we just performed out there," Berryhill said on Saturday. "We've got to get healthy and keep working hard. We've just got to build and continue to get better."
Air Force won the men's team title, while UNLV earned its first team women's MW indoor championship in program history. Wyoming will await the announcement of individual berths to the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will take place March 9-10 in College Station, Texas. The Pokes will then begin the 2018 outdoor season at the Jerry Quiller Classic in Boulder, Colo., March 16-17.
