Parker, Colo. (Oct. 9, 2018) -- In the final round of the 2018 Paintbrush Invitational hosted by the University of Denver, the Wyoming Cowboys shot an even par round of 288 to move up to sixth place in the 12-team field. The Cowboys 288 tied Oregon for the lowest round on the final 18 holes of the tournament and was the second lowest round of the entire tournament. Wyoming ended with a 891 (+27) for 54 holes. John Murdock was the highest finisher for the Pokes, tying for 12th out of 72 competitors with a three-round score of 219 (+3).
Following close behind Murdock was Wyoming freshman
Kirby Coe-Kirkham, who tied for 23rd at 223 (+7), and junior
Dan Starzinski, who tied for 25th at 224 (+8). The other two Cowboys making up the Wyoming five were: freshman
Jimmy Dales, who finished in a tie for 55th, 234 (+18); and sophomore
Carl Underwood, who placed 59th at 237 (+21).
Two Cowboys played in the Paintbrush Invitational as individuals. Freshman
Tyler Severin shot a 54-hole total 229 (+13) to tie for 39th. Redshirt freshman
Jared Edeen finished with a total of 241 (+25) to finish 67th.
The team title was won by Colorado State at six-over par 870. The Rams outdistanced runner-up Oregon, who finished at 14-over par 878. The individual title was captured by Oscar Teiffel of CSU, who fired a 206 (-10) to win by three strokes over Riley Elmes of Loyola Marymount, 209 (-7).
"The guys played a little better in round two and played their best in the final round," said UW head coach
Joe Jensen. "The conditions created an interesting day. We were called off the course once because it was snowing. It was probably as difficult a conditions as I have seen in a tournament.
"I give the kids credit for their attitude and focus given the conditions. It is nice to have the depth we have. We had really balanced scores among our top individual finishers. It was a good event and a great golf course.
"Our final fall tournament in a couple weeks in Hawai'i will present a new challenge, because we will have to deal with the wind, playing on a really quality golf course and against a very good field of teams."
The 2018 Paintbrush Invitational was played at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo. The day one yardage was 7,465 yards and the final round yardage was 7,513 yards. The course played to a par of 72.
Wyoming will conclude its 2018 fall season on Friday-Sunday, Nov. 2-4 at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of Hawai'i in Ka'anapali, Maui, Hawai'i.
