LARAMIE, Wyo. (June 26, 2017) – With summer in full swing, several current and former University of Wyoming golf team members have been busy on the links since the Mountain West Championships ended in late April. The Cowboys and Cowgirls have competed in various events while obtaining high results in the process.
Most recently at the 95th Wyoming State Amateur Golf Championships (WSGA), a pair of UW golfers led the men's and women's championship flights from start to finish. Senior
Glenn Workman outlasted teammates senior
Quintin Pope and junior
John Murdock to take home the 2017 WSGA Amateur Championship, while sophomore
Erin Sargent became the 2017 women's champion.
"I had a blast playing with my teammates," Sargent said. "It's great that we get to cheer each other on while still maintaining that competitive fire between all of us. I definitely gain confidence with every experience I am given. The more competitive the play is, the more comfortable I feel in tournaments. This past year was incredibly beneficial in that aspect of my game. I have been working on trusting the work I put in and feeling confident with my abilities. I plan to continue with that mindset for upcoming tournaments."
Sargent totaled a 216 (E) during the two-day tournament that was held at the Jacoby Golf Course in Laramie. She scored rounds of 73 (+2) during each of the first two rounds before a stellar 70 (-2), which included an eagle on the 14th hole on Sunday to secure the win. Former Cowgirl
Mackenzie Barrie claimed second place with rounds of 76 (+4), 74 (+2) and 73 (+1) for a 223 (+7). Junior
Megan Knadler rounded out the top-3 at Jacoby. The junior shot a 226 (+10) with rounds of 77 (+5), 76 (+4), 73 (+1) during play to tie for third.
Senior
Klara Castillo finished strong on Sunday afternoon with a round of 74 (+2). She closed with a 229 (+13) after posting rounds of 80 (+8) and 75 (+3) to open the tournament. Redshirt freshman
Caitlyn Skavdahl scored a round of 79 (+7) before two rounds of 77 (+5) for a three-round total of 233 (+17), while redshirt sophomore
Kaylee Knadler shot a 240 (+24). Former Cowgirl
Emily Woodard joined the Cowgirls in the championship flight and recorded a 243 (+27) during the tournament.
After Pope won the 2015 and 2016 Wyoming State Amateur Championships, Workman came away with the one-shot victory this year. Workman posted a three-round total of 203 (-10) with rounds of 64 (-7), 65 (-6) and 74 (+3). Pope's 204 (-9) came via rounds of 69 (-2), 62 (-9) and 73 (+2). Murdock was just one shot back of Pope with a 205 (-8). He was solid throughout the tournament with two rounds of 69 (-2) before a final mark of 67 (-4).
"Playing this week was a lot of fun," Workman said. "I just tried to focus on that, and knew if was able to do that the whole tournament I would play well. Getting to play with (
John Murdock) and (
Quintin Pope) made it easy to stay loose as I could laugh all the way until the end. Even when the pressure started to build."
Earlier this month, Murdock won the 2017 Wyoming State Match Play Championship that was held in Hulett, Wyo. Murdock made par on the 18th hole to win one-up over Workman. Additionally, Pope defeated incoming Cowboy freshman Jared Edeen from Cheyenne to take third-place.
Skavdahl finished tied for fourth at the Stroke Play Event on June 3 that was held as part of the 2017 Match Play Championship while at the CWGA Stroke Play Championship, Sargent and
Megan Knadler shared second place behind the 11th-ranked women's amateur in the world, Jennifer Kupcho. Knadler closed with a 74 (+2) as Sargent shot a 75 (+3) as each recorded a three-round total 223 (+7). Junior
Sarah Hankins tied for tenth with a 230 (+4). She had an opening round of 78 (+6) before two additional rounds of 76 (+4) to close out the tournament.
Gabrielle Gibson, the Cowgirls lone California native took part in the Long Beach Golf Festival last week. The senior placed eighth in the tournament with a three-round mark of 222 (+6). She saved her best for last with a 71 (-1) after opening with a 74 (+2) and 77 (+5).
