He took over the starting spot at 141 for the middle portion of the schedule when Cole Brooks was injured. O’Brien enjoyed a strong showing at the Reno Tournament of Champions placing third. Even tough he wasn’t a regular starter, he still managed five major decisions, which was tied for second on the team and his 1.57 takedowns-per-match average was also second on the squad. O’Brien went 0-2 in duals at 141, and he was 10-6 in regular-season tournaments. Before Wyoming: In his three seasons at Utah Valley, O’Brien competed in numerous duals and open tournaments compiling a record of 7-9 over two seasons while going 9-4 during his redshirt season. He won the 2021 Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open posting a 4-0 record. O'Brien finished fourth at the 2021 Roadrunner Open with a record of 4-2. High School: O'Brien prepped at Wasatch High School where he had a very successful career, winning four Utah State titles as well as four divisional titles. He was a two-time NHSCA High School All-American as well and a one-time USA Wrestling Folkstyle All-American. O'Brien helped Wasatch to three state team titles during his high school career.
