ST. GEORGE, Utah – Rising Wyoming star
Kiley Reisner continued her phenomenal freshman season by winning the individual trophy on Sunday at the Thunderbird Classic on the par-72, 5,914-yard Sunbrook Golf Course.
After opening the 54-hole tournament with a 75 on Friday, Reisner ascended to the top of the leaderboard with a 3-under 69 on Saturday and a 2-under 70 in the final round to pull even with Stetson's Isaki Sakashita.
Both players made par on the first hole of the playoff. Reisner clinched the championship with a birdie on the second hole while Sakashita double bogeyed.
This is the 14th time a Cowgirl has won an event. At the 2024 Thunderbird Classic, senior Jadan Gonzalez, shared the individual trophy during a strong showing for UW.
During the fall, Reisner was named the Mountain West freshman of the month for September.
"Obviously, I'm very proud of her performance and how tough and steady and confident she was from start to finish," UW head coach
Josey Stender said. "It has been a goal of hers to win a tournament this season. The first day was tough with the (weather) conditions, but one of her strengths is her determination. It really helps her refocus. Sometimes she can get ahead of herself, but she was in the moment the last 36 holes and knew if she controlled her game she could win."
The Cowgirls (+20) finished third in the nine-team field behind champion Weber State (+2) and runner up Stetson (+7).
Kira Reisner, Kiley's older sister, finished seventh at +3 after sharing the lead entering the final 18 holes. The sophomore's three-round score of 219 was the lowest of her career to date.
Junior
Elle Higgins (+8) and senior
Meghan Vogt (+11), who are both playing through injuries, also finished in the top 20 for UW.
"I'm pretty blessed to have Kiley and Kira. They're very different student-athletes, but they take the game very seriously and they take the game very seriously and they love the University of Wyoming," Stender said. "Our two old ladies are battling injuries right now, but they have persevered for us and they all know where we want to go as a program. I appreciate their leadership."
The Cowgirls will next compete at the Silicon Valley Showcase March 30-31 in Millbrae, Calif.
