Columbia, Mo. (April 10, 2023) -- Wyoming senior
Tyler Severin fired his second consecutive round of 69 (-3) on Tuesday in the final round of the Missouri Tiger Collegiate Invitational to move up into a tie for 29th place in the field of 78 collegiate golfers. For Severin, it was his fourth Top 30 finish in the 10 tournaments he has played this season. He entered the final round tied for 35th place and moved up six positions on Tuesday.
As a team, Wyoming concluded the 54-hole event in 12th place in the 14-team field, totalling a three-round score of 870 (+6). The Cowboys finished ahead of two Big Ten teams as Michigan placed 13th at 871 (+7) and Minnesota finished in 14th at 874 (+10).
The other Cowboys competing in this week's field included junior
Jimmy Dales, who placed 43rd at 217 (+1). Senior
Kirby Coe-Kirkham was two strokes back of Dales at 219 (+3) to tie for 50th. Sophomores
Patrick Azevedo, 224 (+8), and
Kristof Panke, 228 (+12), tied for 62nd and 72nd, respectively.
"We didn't play our best today, but I'm happy we squeezed in another event between our Cowboy Classic and the upcoming BYU tournament," said head men's golf coach
Joe Jensen. "Normally, we have a longer break between those two final regular-season tournaments, but this year I wanted us to keep playing and so we added this event. Tyler (Severin) played well with his second straight 69, but as a team we just weren't sharp today. It was a great event put on by Missouri, and we had the opportunity to play against some different teams. It was great to finish ahead of two Big Ten teams in Michigan and Minnesota."
The top ranked team in the field, No. 5 ranked Illinois, continued its strong play on Tuesday, extending its lead from 15 strokes at the end of Monday's first two rounds to 28 strokes to conclude the tournament. The Fighting Illini shot a final round of 266 (-22) for a 54-hole total of 796 (-68). Second-place and tournament host Missouri finished at 824 (-40). The Missouri Tigers entered the tournament ranked No. 52 in the country by Golfstat. In addition to Illinois, one other Top 25 ranked team was in the field in Kansas State. The Wildcats, ranked No. 25 entering the tourney, finished third at 828 (-36).
Illinois' Jackson Buchanan captured the individual tournament title by four strokes, posting a 194 (-22). His teammate, Adrien Dumont de Chassart, tied with Charlie Crockett of Missouri for second place at 198 (-18).
The Tiger Collegiate Invitational was played at the The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. The course measured 7,221 yards and played to a Par 72.
Wyoming will have 10 days off before playing its final regular-season tournament of the year on Friday and Saturday, April 21-22 at the BYU Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah. The Cowboys' postseason will begin on Friday, April 28 at the Mountain West Championship in Tucson, Ariz. The MW Championship will be played over three days Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the Catalina Course at the OMNI Tucson National Resort.
