PUEBLO, Colo.— The University of Wyoming Track & Field Teams opened up the outdoor season on Friday and Saturday at the Spank Blasing Invite hosted by CSU-Pueblo.
THROWS
Kaitlyn Disbrow opened up competition for the Cowgirls on Friday competing in the javelin. Disbrow got her outdoor season off to a strong start finishing third with a throw of 126-8.
The Cowboys put on an impressive display in the men's discuss led by
Nathan Reid who finished first with a throw of 174-3.
Tarique George joined Reid in the top three finishing third with a mark off 164-7. On the women's side, Cossette Stellern was the lone cowgirl to compete in the event finishing 10
thwith a throw of 126-8.
In the men's shot put,
Cameron Burkett led the way for the Cowboys finishing seventh with a toss of 53-5.75.
Gage Griffith posted a best toss of 47-11.75 to finish in 13
th.
SPRINTS
The Cowboys opened up the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 4X100 with the team of
Jaymison Cox,
Carter McComb,
Remar Pitter and
Wyatt Moore clocking a time of 42.37. The Cowgirls matched that finish with the team of Ashby,
Elayna Chafee,
Tay'Maro Powell-Peters and Haley Esser taking fourth with a time of 49.00.
Jaheim Ferguson was the lone Cowboy to compete in the men's 110M hurdles and he represented well finishing eighth with a time of 14.66. On the women's side Gabby Drube was the lone Wyoming competitor in the event finishing in sixth with a time of 14.60.
Ferguson was back at it in the men's 400M hurdles finishing in second with a time of 52.97 while
Carson Kaminski crossed the line in sixth with a time of 55.02. On the women's side, Drube led the way finishing third with a time of 1:02.2 with
Jenae Ramirez coming in fifth with a time of 1:03.04.
Cox put together a solid performance in the men's 200M, finishing in fifth amongst a field of 40 competitors with a time of 21.82. Darius Wiggnies clocked a time of 22.70 to finish in 14
th. For the Cowgirls, Esser also earned a fifth-place finish crossing the line in 26.22.
Kiona Gibbs-Gonzalez finished inside the top 10 as well, taking eighth with a time of 26.49.
The team of Haley Esser, Gabby Drube,
Jenae Ramirez and
Tay'Maro Powell-Peters wrapped up the day with a win in the women's 4X400 relay posting a time of 3:57.16 to finish in first. The Cowboys capped off their day with a second-place finish in the 4X400 relay as the team of
Darius Wiggins,
Jaymison Cox, Carson Kasminski and Jahiem Ferguson clocked a time of 3:19.15 to earn the runner-up finish.
DISTANCE
Katelyn Mitchem got her outdoor season started in style, winning the women's 1,500M in dominant style, clocking a time of 4:29.25, coming in over five second ahead of the rest of the field.
Kaylee Kearse and
Madelyn Blazo finished inside the top ten as well taking fifth and seventh respectively. For the Cowboys,
Jacob White set the pace finishing fourth with a time of 3:58.10 while
Seth Bruxvoort crossed the line in sixth with a time of 4:00.87. Rounding out a trio of top ten finishers, Mac Zastrow came across the line in seventh.
In the women's 5,000M,
Abigail Whitman led a surge of Cowgirls as she finished second with a time of 17:23.03 while the duo of
Leah Christians and
Hailey Uhre finishes third and fourth and respectively. In total, six Cowgirls finished inside of the top eight. On the men's side,
Cooper Brown led the way, finishing eighth with a time of 15:26.45.
Connor Zydek crossed the line in 18
thwhile
Will Persin finished in 23
rd.
Ryker Holtzen came away with a runner-up finish in the men's 3,000M Steeplechase finishing second with a time of 9:40.55 with
Josh Rodgers finishing just behind him in fourth place with a time of 9:45.42.
JUMPS
Aumni Ashby opened up the meet strong in the women's triple jump, finishing second with a leap of 40-2.75 while Emma Chafee finished just behind her in fourth with a mark of 39-0.25. Chafee's mark lands her eighth on the All-time top ten list while Ashby's mark ranks fourth all-time behind the third best jump in program history which also belongs to Ashby. On the men's side,
Kaliff Guevara finished in 10
thwith a leap of 44-3.25.
In the men's long jump,
Kareem Mersal got his outdoor season started with a win posting a mark of 23-2.75 to finish in first. The duo of
Sage Coventry and
Remar Pitter finished in 12
thand 14
threspectively. On the women's side,
Joan Easter and
Elayna Chafee led the way, finishing sixth and seventh with marks of 17-10.75 and 17-9.50 respectively.
Sadie McMullen was also in action, finishing in 12
thwith a leap of 17-1.50.
Samuel Schneider made it another win on the day for the Cowboys in the men's long jump running away from the rest of the field clearing 6-6.75 to finish in first.
Pete Mead also finished inside the top 10, taking seventh after clearing 6-2.75.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will return to action on March 31-April 1 at the Jack Christensen Invite hosted by Colorado State.
