Laramie, Wyo. (Feb. 12, 2023) -- Wyoming Cowboy senior
Tyler Severin is one of a select group of collegiate golfers who will play in this year's Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase Pro-Am on Monday, Feb. 13. Severin, a senior from Johnstown, Colo., will play in a foursome that will include University of Wyoming donor
Rick Gasser, UW Director of Golf
Joe Jensen and a PGA Tour professional.
Each collegiate golfer will play their own ball throughout the Pro-Am. The top collegiate finisher in the Pro-Am will earn a spot in next week's PGA Genesis Invitational. The Collegiate Showcase Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational will be played on the famed Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The PGA Tour professional and two amateurs in each group will play a best-ball format as a team, with the top team winning a $50,000 donation to the two amateurs' university golf program.
The Wyoming team won the $50,000 prize in the 2021 Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase.
"The Genesis is a special tournament," said UW Director of Golf
Joe Jensen. "We're so grateful to play in it. There are a limited number of college teams who get to play in this tournament each year.
Tyler Severin will represent us this year, and it will be an awesome experience for him. The low college player earns a spot into the Genesis Invitational later in the week. We were fortunate to win the team competition a couple years ago. It will be a great week ahead for us."
The event was created in 2015 in connection with the TGR Foundation, a Tiger Woods Charity. This year's 2023 edition will be the ninth. Wyoming will be competing in its fifth consecutive Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase. In 2019, former Cowboys
John Murdock and
Dan Starzinski were the first two Cowboys to compete in the event. Current Wyoming senior
Kirby Coe-Kirkham represented Wyoming in 2020. Former Poke
Bryce Waters was the Wyoming representative in 2021, and in February of 2022 current Cowboy junior
Jimmy Dales competed for Wyoming.
In addition to the $50,000 that is awarded to the university golf program of the winning team, youth throughout Southern California benefit annually through access to the game of golf during the Genesis Invitational. Thanks to the support of Genesis and The Genesis Invitational's partners, fans and volunteers, TGR Foundation has been able to expand its impact to students in the Los Angeles community and beyond. Since 2016, the foundation has expanded the Earl Woods Scholar Program, welcoming a cohort of students from under-resourced schools in LA each year. TGR Foundation also expanded its programs throughout the LA community to serve middle and high school students, providing access to free learning resources through virtual learning and in-person at TGR Learning Lab in Anaheim. The foundation also has continued to expand free professional development for local educators.
