Ames, Iowa (Jan. 7, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowboy wrestling squad wrapped up their road trip on Saturday with a dual against No. 3 Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. Two Cowboys came away with wins on the day, but the Cyclones took the dual, 37-7.
"We looked better today, Garrett came out and really fought hard. Even after giving up the first takedown he kept battling and put himself in a position to dominate his match." Head Wrestling Coach
Mark Branch said, "We are excited to have a dual back at home now but it only makes a difference if we make it make a difference. So, we have to get back in the room and work on some things and make it happen."
In one of the marquee matchups of the dual No. 9 ranked
Jacob Wright faced off against Iowa State's No. 30 ranked Jason Krassier at 157 pounds. Wright established himself early in the match with a takedown and a first period ride out to put himself in control. Wright then opened the second period with a reversal to go up 4-0 before Krassier flipped the script late and tied the match 4-4. However, with a late escape and the riding time point secured Wright came away with a 6-4 decision for his third ranked of the season. With the victory, Wright bumps his career win total to 95 as he closes in on the century mark.
The Cowboys second win of the dual would be provided by
Garrett Ricks who went up against Conor Knopick at 125 pounds. Knopick controlled the match early scoring the first takedown and building up riding time on Ricks. However, with 20 seconds left to go in the first period Ricks locked up a cradle reversing Knopick to his back for a six-point move to go up 6-2 against the Cyclone. From there Ricks stayed on the gas cruising to a 12-4 major decision victory for his first dual win at UW.
Up next the Cowboys will have a week to prepare for their first home dual of season as they are set to host reigning Big 12 Champions and No. 4 ranked Missouri next Saturday inside of the UniWyo Sports Complex for a white out. The dual is set to begin at 5 p.m. MT.
