FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Sept. 20, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team opened Mountain West play with a four-set loss to Border Rival Colorado State Tuesday night on the road. The Cowgirls fell 17-25, 25-16, 7-25 and 17-25.
After getting off to a choppy start in the first set and in the beginning stages of the second, the Cowgirls (4-9, 0-1 MW) went on a 10-4 run in the second to take control of the frame at 12-8. UW didn't trail the rest of the set and after CSU (8-4, 1-0 MW) cut the deficit to 13-12, the Cowgirls again went on a big run in the second, this time closing the set on an impressive 12-4 run. From there however, the Rams were able to control the third and fourth sets to take the match.
Corin Carruth paced Wyoming with eight kills on the night while a trio of Cowgirls, Tierney Barlow, Teresa Garza and KC McMahon all added seven kills each in the loss. Barlow continued her strong start in her career in the Brown and Gold, as the freshman hit .385 against the Rams. McMahon and Kayla Mazzocca recorded a team-best two total blocks in the contest as both teams registered just three total blocks as a team in the match.
The Rams did most of their damage offensively, hitting .415 Tuesday night while the Cowgirls hit .240 as a squad. CSU also had 11 service aces in the match while the Cowgirls tallied seven. Colorado State also had four fewer serving errors (10-6) on Tuesday.
Kendal Rivera had three of the Cowgirl aces in the match while Kasia Partyka added two of her own. Partyka also led the way with 31 assists and added five digs. Garza, meanwhile, had a team-high 10 digs while libero Hailey Zuroske added five.
UW now looks to rebound Saturday in Laramie as the Cowgirls welcome UNLV for a 1 p.m., contest in the home conference-opener.
