Bremerton, Wash. (April 30, 2022) -- For the second consecutive day, the Wyoming Cowboys shot a round of 290 (+2) and have positioned themselves in a strong position entering Sunday's final round of the 2022 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship. The Cowboys will enter the final round in sixth place in the field of 11 MW men's golf teams with a team score of 580 (+4). Two Cowboys, redshirt sophomore
Jimmy Dales and redshirt freshman
Patrick Azevedo, are tied for seventh and 12th, respectively, in the individual competition.
Wyoming is only four strokes back of fifth-place San Jose State. The Pokes hold a four-stroke lead over seventh-place Fresno State and a five-stroke lead over eighth-place New Mexico. The Lobos entered the MW Championship as the No. 34 ranked team in the nation.
Dales two-round total of 140 (-4) has him tied for seventh but only one stroke out of fifth, only two strokes out of fourth and only four strokes out of second. Azevedo, competing in his first Mountain West Championship, fired a 69 (-3) on Saturday to improve his two-round total to 142 (-2) only two strokes back of Dales and tied for 12th place.
"We played another consistent round today. We had a tough start, but we battled back," said UW Director of Golf
Joe Jensen. "The guys maintained their fight, and I was pleased again today with their effort.
"Jimmy (Dales) and Pat (Azevedo) both shot under-par rounds today to keep themselves in the mix. Jimmy could have had an even better round if he could have made a couple more putts. Tyler (Severin) started slow on the front nine, but really played well on the back nine, and Jaren (Calkins) settled in on the back nine to finish strong. Bryce had a difficult day, and I know he was disappointed.
"We're in a nice position and I'm going to tell the team that I just want to see them continue to play hard and compete tomorrow the way they have the first two days."
The Cowboys have taken advantage of the NCAA Substitution Rule at this year's MW Championship. Junior
Kirby Coe-Kirkham played in the first round on Friday. Fellow junior
Tyler Severin was inserted into the Wyoming lineup on Saturday.
The Cowboys will be paired with seventh-place Fresno State in Sunday's final round. That pairing is set to tee off starting at 10:30 a.m., Pacific Time.
The 2022 Mountain West Championship is being played on the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton,Wash. The course measures 7,115 yards and plays to a par of 72.
