Provo, Utah (April 22, 2022) --  In a day that saw lightning interrupt play at the BYU PING Cougar Classic, the Wyoming Cowboys concluded the first round in seventh place in the field of 13 teams, shooting a team score of 286 (-2).  Junior Kirby Coe-Kirkham led the way for the Cowboys, tying for 17th out of 83 individual golfers with an opening round score of two-under par 70.
 
Two lightning delays during the first round on Friday resulted in teams being unable to complete the planned second round of the day.  Teams will have four to five holes remaining to complete on Saturday morning in order to finish the second round.  The third and final round is scheduled to be completed immediately after round two on Saturday.
 
In addition to Coe-Kirkham's 17th-place showing in the first round at 70 (-2), fellow junior Tyler Severin is tied for 26th at 71 (-1) and freshman Jaren Calkins is tied for 36th after shooting an even-par round of 72.  Redshirt freshman Patrick Azevedo posted a 73 (+1) to tie for 45th, and senior Bryce Waters is tied for 61st at 75 (+3).
 
Two Cowboys are playing as individuals in the Cougar Classic.  Redshirt sophomore Jimmy Dales is tied with Calkins in 36th place at 72 (Even), and freshman Cade McLaughlin is tied with Waters for 61st at 75 (+3).
 
The Host BYU Cougars finished the opening round in first place, firing an 18-under par score of 270 to hold a three-stroke lead over second place San Diego at 273 (-15).  The tournament's individual leader is David Timmins of BYU, who posted a nine-under par round of 63.  He is two strokes ahead of his BYU teammate Carson Lundell and Boise State's Hugo Townsend, who both shot opening round scores of 65 (-7).
 
The 57th PING Cougar Classic is being played on the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah.  The course measures 7,142 yards and plays to a par of 72.
