Palm Desert, Calif. (March 4, 2022) --  With an outstanding final round of 286 (-2), the Wyoming Cowboys moved up three spots to finish third in the field of 20 teams at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Friday.  The Cowboys were led by three players who finished in the Top 20, including: Bryce Waters, who tied for third; Tyler Severin, tied for eighth; and Patrick Azevedo, who tied for 17th.
 
Cowboy senior Waters tied for third with Tyler Schafer of Long Beach State at 210 (-6).  Waters recorded his second round of 68 (-4) for the tournament on Friday.  He also shot a 68 on Wednesday in the opening round.  He moved up eight spots in the final round.  The other Cowboy who made a big move up the standings on Friday was junior Severin.  He posted his second consecutive two-under par round of 70 on Friday to move up seven spots from 15th to eighth, ending with a three-round total of 213 (-3).  The third Cowboy to finish in the Top 20 was redshirt freshman Azevedo, who continued his consistent play with a final round 73 (+1) to go with prevous rounds of 71 (-1) and 72 (Even) for a total of even par 216.
 
Wyoming shot a 54-hole total of 865 (+1) to tie with New Mexico State for third place.  Charlotte won the team title at 839 (-25), while Nevada came in second at 857 (-7).  Charlotte teammates Ben Woodruff and Matt Sharpstene finished one-two in the individual competition.  Woodruff concluded the tournament with a 206 (-10) total.  Sharpsten was two shots back at 208 (-8).
 
"We're thrilled with the way we finished, moving up to third in the final round," said Joe Jensen, UW Director of Golf and Head Men's Golf Coach.  "It was a really good finish for us against a quality field, including a couple of the top teams in our conference in Nevada and Boise State.  We were able to finish ahead of Boise and competed well against Nevada. 
 
"Bryce (Waters) finished strong with a third-place finish.  Tyler (Severin) and Patrick (Azevedo) also played well.
 
"I felt like our guys had good energy throughout the tournament, and I thought they did a good job of playing through the ups and downs.  Seeing that makes me feel good about the direction of our team.  I'm really proud of our guys performance."
 
Rounding out the team scoring for Wyoming were: Jimmy Dales 221 (+5) tied for 47th; Kirby Coe-Kirkham 222 (+6) good for 56th; and Jaren Calkins 229 (+13) tied for 89th.
 
In addtion to Severin, who competed as an individual, the Pokes had three other players compete as individuals.  Cade McLaughlin tied for 35th at 219 (+3), and Cowboy teammates Jared Edeen and Aidan Mann tied for 99th at 232 (+16).  There were a total of 114 golfers in the field. 
 
The 2022 Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate was played at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.  The course measured 7,305 yards and played to a par of 72.
 
Next up for the Wyoming Cowboys will be the Lamkin San Diego Classic on Monday and Tuesday, March 7-8.  The tournament will be hosted by San Diego State on the San Diego Country Club, with two 18-hole rounds to be played on Monday and the final round on Tuesday.
