Laramie, Wyo. (Sept. 11, 2021) -- The Wyoming Cowboys are one of five teams under par at the conclusion of the second round of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. Wyoming shot a second-round score of 282 on Saturday, improving by seven strokes over their opening round 289 on Friday and will enter Sunday's final round at 571 (-5). Cowboys
Kirby Coe-Kirkham and
Jimmy Dales continued their outstanding play and are tied for 10th at 142 (-2). UW's
Tyler Severin is also in the thick of the individual competition tied for 16th at 143 (-1).
"We're playing steady right now and that is a good thing," said
Joe Jensen, University of Wyoming Director of Golf and Head Men's Golf Coach. "No one on our team has shot a really low round, but the guys are playing very consistently. I want the guys to continue to trust our process -- both in how we prepare for each round and how we play in each round. If we can continue to trust our process I think we can finish off a nice tournament."
Wyoming's 571 (-5) places them only one stroke back of Mountain West opponent Nevada, which sits in fourth at 570 (-6). Denver posted a two-day total of 568 (-8) and is in third place. San Jose State will enter Sunday at 566 (-10) and in second place. UC Davis extended its tournament lead, holding a 15-stroke lead at 551 (-25). In the competition between six Mountain West schools in the tournament. Wyoming trails only second-place San Jose State by five strokes and fourth-place Nevada by one stroke. UNLV is in 10th at 585 (+9). Utah State is in 18th at 599 (+23), and Air Force is in 20th at 623 (+47).
Leading the way for the Cowboys is Coe-Kirkham and Dales who are tied in a group for 10th at 142 (-2). Only one stroke back of them is Severin at 143 (-1) tied for 16th.
Bryce Waters at 148 (+4) and
Jared Edeen at 150 (+6) are tied for 46th and 59th, respectively. On Saturday, Coe-Kirkham and Severin each fired rounds of 70 (-2), while Dales and Waters shot rounds of 71 (-1) to provide the balanced attack for the Pokes.
The individual tournament leader is Thomas Hutchison of UC Davis. He sits at 130 (-14) and holds a five-stroke lead over Blake Brothers of Cal State Northridge and Greg Yellin of UTEP who are tied for second at 135 (-9).
The team competition is being played on the Eisenhower Blue Course. In addition to the team competition, a group of 45 individual golfers are playing on the Eisenhower Silver Course. Wyoming's four players participating in the individual tournament include redshirt freshman
Patrick Azevedo, who is tied for fifth at 144 (even), True freshmen
Jaren Calkins and
Aidan Mann are tied for 10th at 146 (+2). True freshman
Cade McLaughlin is tied for 19th at 149 (+5).
The Eisenhower Blue Course measures 7,451 yards and plays to a par of 72, and the Silver Course also plays to a par of 72. The third and final round of the team competition will tee off on Sunday morning beginning at 7:30 a.m, Wyoming will tee off at 8:20 a.m. and will play with Colorado, UTEP and Weber State on Sunday.
