MARICOPA, Ariz. (April 6, 2021) – The Wyoming Cowgirl golf team moved up two spots in tough conditions on the final day of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic. The tournament was played at the par-72 6,131-yard AK-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.

"I can't thank the staff from Southern Dunes and Wyoming for all their hard work in making this a first class college event," head coach Josey Stender said. "It is very difficult hosting away from home let alone all the changes with COVID."

The Cowgirls fired a final-round 307 to finish the event with a 51-over 915 after 54 holes. New Mexico State jumped up two spots to take home the team title with a three round score of 5-over 869. South Dakota State finished second with a 12-over 876, while Grand Canyon placed third with a three round total of 14-over 878. Brittany Shin of CSU took the individual title with a 5-under 211.

"I'm very pleased with the mental toughness and complete effort by the team. The course played tough with the wind and firmness of the greens but they adjusted and stayed positive."

Wyoming was led by senior Caitlyn Skavdahl who finished her tournament with a 79 in the final round to tie for 31st with a 10-over 226. It was the highest finish of her career at the event. Freshman Jessica Zapf moved up six spots to finish in a tie for 45th with a three day total of 13-over 229 (80-72-77). Graduate Erin Sargent completed her tournament with a 15-over 231 (77-77-77) to finish in a tie for 53rd.

"I'm very encouraged not only with the fact we moved up but how the individual play is trending to where we are capable of playing."

Freshman Morgan Ryan, competing as an individual, carded a final round 7-over 79 for a three round total of 16-over 232. She was followed by sophomore Samantha Hui who had a three day score of 17-over 233 after a final round of 5-over 77. Junior Michelle Nguyen turned in a third round score of 5-over 77 for a total score of 18-over 234 (77-80-77). Sophomore Cristiana Ciasca was the biggest mover on the day, shooting a team best 4-over 76. She completed her tournament in a tie for 69th with a total of 18-over 234 (81-77-76).
