Palm Desert, Calif. (Feb. 19, 2021) -- Led by sophomores
Tyler Severin and
Jared Edeen, who both opened with two-under par rounds of 70, the Wyoming Cowboys are in sole possession of 10th place in a field of 21 collegiate golf teams at the 2021 Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. As a team, Wyoming fired a round of 290 (+2) on Friday. Severin and Edeen are tied for 20th, but are only two shots out of third place after the first round.
Wyoming's other three team members include: junior
Carl Underwood, who is tied for 43rd at 73 (+1); senior
Dan Starzinski shot a 77 (+5) to tie for 85th; and junior
Bryce Waters posted a 78 (+6) and is tied for 94th. The Cowboys also have two team members playing as individuals. Redshirt freshman
Liam Clancy opened with a 74 (+2) and is tied for 52nd. Sophomore
Kirby Coe-Kirkham is tied for 85th at 77 (+5).
"We had a solid start today," said
Joe Jensen, Wyoming Director of Golf. "I feel like as a team we are about 80 percent confident in our games right now. We can go a stretch of holes and play great, and then we have a couple holes where we make some careless mistakes. I know right now that I have to be patient as this is only the fourth round of golf we've played as a team in a year. I believe we have a competitive team and the guys definitely have a desire to play well, but we still need to get our feet underneath us.
"I'm proud of the way Tyler (Severin) and Jared (Edeen) played today. I'm also proud of the way the guys fought back today. About midway through the round, we were four or five over and then we made a few birdies coming in and got back to two over par.
"This is a very good, competitive field of teams. We did have a nice start, but I am going to challenge the guys to go out tomorrow and have a better round than they did today. We have a nice balance on this team. We may not go out and dominate, but with our balance if we can play consistent and make less mistakes than other teams we have a chance to be very competitive in this tournament."
Kansas leads the team standings, firing an opening round 274 (-14). The Jayhawks hold a two-stroke lead over Georgia Tech 276 (-12). Charlotte is in third place at 277 (-11), and Oregon sits in fourth at 278 (-10).
Including Wyoming's Severin and Edeen, a total of 29 players are packed together within five strokes of the lead. The individual leader is Luke Kluver of KU at 65 (-7). Tom Gueant of Oregon is two strokes back at 67 (-5). Seven individuals are tied for third at 68 (-4). Ten individuals sit at 69 (-3) to tie for 10th. Severin and Edeen are in a group of ten other players tied for 20th at 70 (-2).
The second of three 18-hole rounds of the 2021 Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate will be played on Saturday, with teams teeing off at 7 a.m., Pacific Time (8 a.m., Mountain Time).
