LARAMIE, Wyo. (Feb. 14, 2021) – The Wyoming Cowgirl golf team will finally have an opportunity to get its season underway on Monday at the Mountain Match Play Classic in Palm Desert, Calif. It's the first time they have competed in a team event since March 10, 2020. The Cowgirls are co-hosting the event with Mountain West opponent Boise State. Along with the Wyoming and the Broncos, the other teams participating are Southern Utah and Utah Valley.

"The team and I couldn't be more grateful or excited for a tournament in a very long time.  They have put an incredible amount of focused effort into their physical and mental games, overall fitness and daily discipline to get to this point," head coach Josey Stender said. "We know this season will look a little different but they have truly embraced our team culture and goals which I believe will positively guide us. The Classic Club is a special place for our program and to begin the season competing in a unique format like match play will be a fun challenge."  

This week's tournament is set up on the 6,081-yard, par-72 course at the prestigious Classic Club golf course. The first round of play is scheduled to start with tee times from 8-9:10 a.m. MT on Monday with 18 holes of play followed by the second round set to tee off from 1-2:10 p.m. The third round is also scheduled for 8-9:10 a.m. on Tuesday. 

The format is a Round Robin Match Play. Each round will consist of six head-to-head matches, with the winner of each earning a point for her team. If competitors are tied after 18 holes, the match will be halved. After the three rounds, the school with the most points will be declared the winner. Ties between teams will be broken based on total number of matches won.

On Monday, Wyoming will face Southern Utah in the first round followed by a match-up with Boise State. They will close out the tournament against Utah Valley.

The Cowgirl lineup features for the week includes Erin Sargent, Caitlyn Skavdahl, Cristiana Ciasca, Samantha Hui, Michelle Nguyen, Morgan Ryan and Jessica Zapf.
