LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Feb. 29, 2020) – It was a strong day on the courts for the Wyoming women's tennis team as the Cowgirls bounced back from last week with a solid 5-2 victory at New Mexico State Saturday afternoon.
"The team did a great job battling the elements and showing a lot of resiliency today," said Head Coach Dean Clower.
"By no means did we play our best tennis, but good teams find ways to get it done and we did that today. Road wins are always good wins and today the team earned it."
The win, improved the Cowgirls to 6-2 overall this spring and was their third true road match victory of the season thus far.
Wyoming fell behind early in the match as the Aggies (1-6) won the doubles point to begin play. The team of Clara Mansart and Ana Royo at No. 3 got the lone win during the doubles portion for UW. Mansart and Royo bested Lucija Josipovic and Neus Torregrosa of New Mexico State, 6-4.
NMSU was able to win a pair of hard-fought matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles as Harsha Challa and Gavi Kalaga defeated the tandem of Oleksandra Balaba and Maria Oreshkina 7-5 while at No. 2, Kaela Di Giulio and Chloe Gavino was able to outlast Mihaela Kaftanova and Ida Kraus 7-6 (5-3).
In singles play, the Cowgirls went to work, winning five of the six matchups on the day to take the match. At No. 1, Oreshkina took down Challa 6-3 and 7-5. At No. 3, Ana Fernandez won a three-setter over Gavino, 6-2, 3-6 and 6-3. At No. 4, Krause bested Kalaga, also in three sets, 6-4, 5-7 and 6-3.
At No. 5 singles, Royo won without surrendering a game, beating Bella Nguyen of NMSU, 6-0 and 6-0. Mansart got the Cowgirls on the board first in the match, as her matchup at No. 6 singles was the first singles match concluded on the day. Mansart dispensed of Josipovic, 6-1 and 6-0.
The Cowgirls now look to make it a perfect road weekend as they will travel to El Paso, Texas for a 10 a.m., contest Sunday at UTEP.
