MCCOMB, Miss. (Feb. 16, 2020) – The Wyoming women's tennis team had to wait a few hours to get start, but once the rain cleared, the Cowgirls got the job done on the way to recording their third consecutive shutout Sunday afternoon in McComb, Mississippi, as the Cowgirls downed Southeastern Louisiana, 4-0 to move to 5-1 on the young spring season.
It was a hard-fought shutout victory for the Cowgirls as UW began the day by taking the doubles' point by winning 2-of-3 matches. The duo of Oleksandra Balaba and Maria Oreshkina at No. 2 took down the tandem of Flory Bierma and Kim Bohlen with ease, 6-1. Then at No. 3, Clara Mansart and Ana Royo clinched the doubles point with hard-fought 7-5 victory over Southeastern's Katya Cornejo and Teodora Mitrovic.
At No. 1 singles, the team of Mihaela Kaftanova and Ida Krause dropped the lone completed match of the day for the Cowgirls, losing to Putri Insani and Ximena Yanez, 6-2.
On the singles side of things, the Cowgirls earned the first three wins of the day at Nos. 1-3 to clinch the team win. At No. 1, Oreshkina continued her strong start to the spring, besting Insani in a hard-fought two-set victory, 6-3 and 7-6 (7-4).
At No. 2, Balaba made quick work of her opponent, Bierma, besting her in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1. While at No. 3 to clinch the match, Krause took a hard-fought two-setter against Polina Sleptslova, 7-5 and 7-5.
Wyoming will now shift its focus to a regional opponent next weekend as the Cowgirls travel to face Colorado in a 2 p.m., contest in Boulder on Saturday, Feb. 22.
