PALM DESERT, Calif. (Sept. 28, 2019) – The Wyoming women's golf team sits in a tie for sixth place after the first two rounds at the Wyoming Desert Classic in Palm Desert, wrapping up the first 36 holes with a 50-over 626 on Saturday.
Senior
Erin Sargent was the low Cowgirl on the team's first day and sits in a tie for tenth. She started off with a 2-over 74 to begin the day then carded a second round five-over 77 for a combined total of 7-over 151. Playing as an individual, fellow senior
Kaylee Knadler completed the day with a 12-over 156 which currently is 25
th. She finished with a seven-over 79 in the first round followed by a season-best five-over 77.
Sophomores
Cristiana Ciasca and
Samantha Hui are both tied for 29
th. Ciasca had a first round score of six-over 78 and a second round eight-over 80 for a combined 14-over 158. After shooting an opening round of ten-over 82, Hui followed it up with a four-over 76.
"We had a couple of costly swings today and had a tough time adjusting to the greens from earlier this week," head coach
Josey Stender. "The team played resilient and had to grind it out in a tough set up. We are in a spot to move up but will have to play with more confidence tomorrow."
Sophomore
Michelle Nguyen heads into Sunday in a tie for 33rd with a 16-over 160 on the day. After shooting an opening round nine-over 81, she improved her second round by two strokes with a seven-over 79. Junior
Caitlyn Skavdahl follows in a tie for 38
th place. She had back to back rounds of 81 for a combined score of 18-over 162.
Two others were also competing as individuals on Saturday. Freshman
Morgan Ryan turned in an 11-over 83 for her first round and followed it up with tough 16-over 88 to sit in a tie for 53rd. Fellow freshman
Jessica Zapf shot an opening round of 12-over 84, while shooting a second round of 16-over 88.
Cal Poly leads the field at 22-over with a 598, followed by UTEP (+27, 603) and Southern Utah (+34, 610). Louisiana Monroe is fourth (+46, 622) and Hawaii (+48, 624) rounding out the top five. Chanikan Yongyuan of Southern Utah is the clubhouse leader with a one-over 145 followed by Valeria Mendizabal of UTEP and Vanessa Richani Long Beach State who are two-over 146.
The tournament is being played at the par-72 6,097-yard Classic Club. Wyoming will tee off for the tournament's final round tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. MT. in a shotgun start.
