CANCUN, Mexico (Sept. 27, 2019) – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis squad has had a strong couple of days of tennis south of the border at the Iberostar Collegiate Cup. Friday, the Cowgirls picked up a pair of dual-mode victories, sweeping Cleveland State 5-0 and defeating Southeastern Louisiana 3-2.

"I thought with all the weather delays and other challenges we faced the last couple of days, our team is really coming together," said head coach Dean Clower.

Ida Krause and Clara Mansart picked up singles wins against the Vikings, defeating Kate Avram and Gaby Schoenberg, respectively. While the doubles teams of Mihaela Kaftanova and Maria Oreshkina beat Klara Mrcela and Prinkle Singh and the potent duo of Ana Fernandez and Ana Royo won over Blanche Lenoan and Sian Payne.

Against the Lions, it was Oreshkina who picked up the lone singles victory while the doubles teams of Oleksandra Balaba and Zarah Mughal and Ida Krause and Clara Mansart secured doubles victories in the match.

"In the short amount of time during the season, our staff has seen drastic improvement each day from the girls," said Clower.

"The upper classmen are paving the way and the freshmen are following suit. To see the freshmen buying into what we are doing here has been a blast to be a part of."

Earlier in the week, Fernandez and Mughal also picked up singles victories. Fernandez defeated Mrcela of CSU, 8-2 while Mughal won a convincing 8-1 match against Schoenberg.

On the doubles front, the Cowgirls have pulled out multiple hard-fought wins. The team of Balaba and Oreshkina won a 9-8(6) thriller over Avram and Mrcela. Krause and Mansart grabed an 8-6 win over Prosenjak and Schoenberg Wednesday and then beat Prosenjak and Avram 8-2 Thursday.
