COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 15, 2019) - The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team completed its opening weekend of fall play Sunday in day four of the ITA Bedford Cup. The Cowgirls recorded three doubles wins and a pair of singles victories Sunday.
The duo of Oleksandra Balaba and Ida Krause grabbed a strong 8-1 victory in their final match of the tournament over Southern Utah's Daniela Cozzi and Jessica Stefan. The teams of Zarah Mughal and Maria Oreshkina and Clara Mansart and Mihaela Kaftanova both picked up 8-4 wins on the day. Mughal and Oreshkina defeated Beazly and Bland of Northern Arizona while Mansart and Kaftanova bested Montana State's Haverkamp and Van Baelen.
In the Bravo doubles championship match, the team of Ana Fernandez and Ana Royo were defeated for the first time in the tournament, falling 8-2 to New Mexico's Hsiang-Wen Huang and Alisia Manolescu.
In singles play, Mughal and Royo picked up the two wins on the day for Wyoming. Royo defeated UNM's Myu Kageyama 6-4 and 6-1 while Mughal picked up a tough win over Haverkamp, 6-4, 6-7(2) and 10-5.
Kaftanova was bested in her championship matchup in the Bravo bracket, losing 7-5, 6-2 to Huang of New Mexico.
Balaba was defeated by Mirte Van Baelen of MSU, 6-2 and 6-3. Fernandez was defeated by Air Force's Ashleigh Harvey, 7-5 and 6-4. Krause lost to Nadeen Lieberman of Air Force, 6-3 and 6-1. Mansart fell 6-1 and 7-6(6) by Elinor Beazley of Northern Arizona.
The Pokes return to action for their home tournament next weekend as the Wyoming Invite opens Friday and runs through Sunday at the UW Tennis Complex.
