Cowgirls Open Fall at Day One of ITA Bedford Cup

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 12, 2019) – Mihaela Kaftanova, Ana Fernandez and Maria Oreshkina all picked up opening-day victories in day one of the ITA Bedford Cup to open the 2019 fall season for the Wyoming women's tennis team.

After receiving a first round bye in the Bravo singles division, Kaftanova earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory in her first match over Southern Utah's Chloe Purkiss and will face Air Force's Courtney Swift on day two in the winner's bracket.

Fernandez opened up her tournament in the Alpha bracket with an impressive 6-1 and 6-1 victory over Northern Colorado's Milena Belianovich before falling in three sets in her second match to Northern Arizona's Chiara Tomasetti. Fernandez took the opening set 6-1 before dropping the next two sets, both by scores of 6-2. Fernandez will begin tomorrow facing Air Force's Meredith Jones.

Oreshkina opened her fall campaign with a 6-4, 6-2 win over UNC's Madison Wolfe. In her second match of the day, Oreshkina had to retire in the second set against Colorado State's Priscilla Palermo. Emilie Haakansson of NAU will be Oreshkina's opponent to begin Friday.

Oleksandra Balaba lost to Air Force's Nadeen Lieberman, 6-2 and 6-3. Ida Krause took the loss in her opening match to the Falcons' Jones, who will face Fernandez later in the tournament. Krause dropped the match 6-1, 6-0.

Clara Mansart dropped a tough, three-set match to Montana State's Linnea Fristam, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2. Zarah Mughal lost 7-5 and 6-4 to AFA's Shailla Alda. Both Mansart and Mughal would respond in their consolation matches however, as Mansart defeated SUU's Alexandra Ngo, not surrendering a game, 6-0 and 6-0. Mughal would close the day with a thrilling 6-2, 2-6 and 10-8 victory over UNC's Natalie Stanton.

Rounding out the singles results for the Cowgirls on day one was Ana Royo, who was defeated by New Mexico's Alisia Manolescu, 6-2 and 6-4.

No doubles matches were played Thursday. Doubles play begins Friday with a pair of rounds while there will be just one round of singles play.
