GILLETTE, Wyo. (January 26, 2019) – The Wyoming track & field teams had the opportunity to compete in Gillette this weekend, and earned a split against Montana State's teams. The Cowboys edged the Bobcats on the final event of the day, 74-73, while the Cowgirls dropped a close dual, 75-73.

"I thought the effort and focus was there again today," said head coach Bryan Berryhill. "We saw big improvements from last week across all event areas. I like the direction this team is going with four weeks until the conference meet."

The Cowboys trailed MSU, 70-69 heading into the final event, the 4x400-meter relay. The winner earned five points and the second-place finisher would collect three. The Cowboy squad of Bryce Ailshie, Brandon McGuire, Jacob Harthun and Jace Marx edged Montana State's team by 0.14 seconds to pick up the five points and secure the team victory. The final time in that event for the team was 3:23.04.

It wasn't just the relay squad earning points for the Cowboys, as they had seven other first-place finishes. Jace Marx won the 60m dash with a time of 6.99, the only competitor under seven seconds. Sam Kirkeide found the podium on that event, finishing third with a time of 7.13. For the second week in a row, Ailshie won the 800m run, this time finishing first in 1:54.10, a season-best time for the senior.

The Cowboys swept first place in the distance races, as junior Paul Roberts won the mile run with a time of 4:15.31, finishing ahead of classmate Christopher Henry's time of 4:15.64. In the 3,000m race, Michael Downey took first with a time of 8:41.93. He was joined on the podium by Jonah Henry, who placed third in 8:54.32.

In the field, William Nolan swept the long and triple jump for the third time this season. His long jump mark of 23 feet, nine inches was good enough for first place over Montana State's Alexander Lewis in a matchup of two top-50 jumpers in the country. In the triple jump, Nolan outclassed the field with a leap of 46-11.75 to win the event title.

The Cowboy weight throwers put on a clinic, as they swept the podium. Hap Frketich took first with a career-best throw of 64-5.75, while Kirk Unland finished second with a career-best toss of 63-8.75. Eric McArthur finished third, throwing 56-0.

For the Cowgirls, Jerayah Davis again took a pair of sprinting titles, as she won the 60m dash with a time of 7.29, before winning the 200m dash with a career-best time of 24.24, the fourth-fastest time in Cowgirl history. Jordan Edmonds took third in those same events with times of 7.88 and 25.49, respectively.

Davis picked up her third event title of the day in the long jump, placing first with a season-best leap of 19-9, just ahead of teammate Shayla Howell, whose mark of 18-8.5 was good enough for second.

Aumni Ashby shined in the triple jump, winning that event with a mark of 38-3.25, while Howell took second with a leap of 37-2.5.

Jasmyne Cooper won the 800m run with a career-best time of 2:15.96, and she was joined in the top-three by Emily Person, who took third with a time of 2:25.13.

The Cowgirl throwers picked up plenty of points, as they took the top two spots in the shot put and swept the weight throw. In the shot put, Addison Henry and Mary Carbee finished ahead of the field with marks of 45-1.75 and 43-7.75, respectively, in season-best throws for both Cowgirls. The weight throw squad performed well as Emelda Malm-Annan took first with a toss of 59-4.25, ahead of teammates Henry and Cosette Stellern, who had marks of 52-5.75 and 51-9.75, respectively.

The Wyoming squads are back in action Friday through Saturday, Feb. 1-2, at the Colorado Open in Boulder, Colo.
