LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 22, 2018) – The Cowgirl tennis team concluded play on Saturday at the Wyoming Invite in Laramie.
"I thought we are beginning to play our style of tennis in doubles," head coach
Dean Clower said. "Ana (Royo) and Ana (Fernandez) brought a ton of energy and fight to the match today which was great to see. We have a lot of talent and passion which will play off in our progress towards April."
In doubles play, two teams sported a 2-0 record while the third went 1-1. Seniors
Elisa Koonik and
Tessa van Der Ploeg opened up the day with a 6-2 victory over Ashleigh Harvey and Nadeen Lieberman of Air Force followed by a 7-6 (8-6) win against Isabella Dunlap and Paola Landin of Central Oklahoma. The duo of
Ana Fernandez and
Ana Royo beat Alex Kuo and Amanda Reinhart (AFA), 6-2, while winning 7-5 against Nikki Boyar and Sarah Van Eeckhoudt (UCO). Stella Cliffe and Alyssa Grijalva (CSU) earned a 6-3 win over
Mihaela Kaftanova and
Maria Oreshkina but they responded with a 7-5 victory over Kirtana Bhat and Adel Byanu (UCO) to close out the day.
In the only section of singles for the Cowgirls, three individuals came away with victories. Fernandez dropped her first set against Reinhart of Air Force 6-3, but responded with the next two 6-4, 6-3. Royo won in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, while
Ida Krause defeated Jessica Le of Central Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-1.
Harvey (AFA) beat van Der Ploeg in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, followed by Lieberman (AFA) earning a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Koonik. Kaftanova lost a tough three set match, 0-6, 6-3, 6-2, against Reeves (CSU), while Oreshkina fell short to Grijalva, 6-3, 6-3.
The final day of the tournament will be tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. MT with matches between Air Force, Central Oklahoma and Colorado State. The Cowgirls will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 5 at the CSU Invite in Ft. Collins.
