LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 21, 2018) – The Wyoming tennis team had mixed results on the opening day of the Wyoming Invite on Friday morning.
"It was a mixed bag for us today," head coach
Dean Clower said. "It was good that we got to come out and play in a great atmosphere at home especially for the newcomers who aren't used to playing in front of our fans. We have a lot to work on and will continue to do so over the next couple of days and in practice during the week."
Junior
Ana Royo sported a 2-0 mark in singles. She opened up with a three set win, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, over Jessica Le of Central Oklahoma followed by a two set victory against Amanda Reinhart of Air Force, 6-2, 6-2. Senior
Tessa van Der Ploeg defeated Adel Byanu in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, in her only match. Freshmen
Mihaela Kaftanova and
Maria Oreshkina also won their only matches of the day. Kaftanova beat Paola Landin, 6-2, 6-3, while Oreshkina earned a straight set win, 6-4, 6-3, over Kirtana Bhat. Fellow freshman
Ana Fernandez split her day with an opening win against Sarah Van Eeckhoudt, 6-4, 6-0, but dropped a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) match against Ashleigh Harvey of Air Force.
The final two Cowgirls in action were senior
Elisa Koonik and freshman
Ida Krause. Koonik lost a tough three setter, 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) against Isabella Dunlap of Central Oklahoma, while Krause dropped a two matches against Nikki Boyar (UCO), 6-0, 6-3, and a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 loss to Alex Kuo (AFA)
Only three matches for Wyoming on the doubles side. Kaftanova and Oreshkina won the only match of the day over Bhat and Van Eeckhoudt, 6-3. Koonik and van Der Ploeg, fell to Landin and Dunlap, 6-3, while Boyar and Byanu defeated Fernandez and Krause, 6-4.
The tournament will continue tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. MT. The Cowgirls are scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
