Cowgirls Close Out First Day in Tucson

TUCSON (March 23, 2018) – Taking on a tough field at the MountainView Collegiate Invitational, the University of Wyoming women's golf team closed out the opening round of the three-day tournament in 15th place on Friday. The Cowgirls carded a 309 (+21) heading into action Saturday.

"Today was up and down for us, individually and as a team," Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender said. "While we made a lot of birdies, a few errant shots really penalized us. We still have 36 more holes to play and this team has a lot of fight in them. We are not that far out of it but we need to come out more confident tomorrow."

Individually, senior Gabrielle Gibson and junior Megan Knadler led the Cowgirls and find themselves in the top-40 after the first day. The two Cowgirls are tied for 38th overall after completing the first 18-holes of play with a 76 (+4). Gibson posted three birdies on Friday, while Knadler recorded two.

Junior Sarah Hankins is one shot back of Gibson and Knadler. Hankins signed for a 77 (+5) after leading the Brown and Gold with five birdies. Hankins warmed up as the round went on, with recording four of her five birdies on the back nine.

Sophomore Erin Sargent shot an 80 (+8) in the opening round and is tied for 67th, while redshirt freshman Caitlyn Skavdahl closed out the first round tied for 76th with a day-one total 83 (+11).

No. 10 Illinois is leading the 15-team field. The Fighting Illini posted a 288 (E) on Friday, as San Jose State is two shots back for second place. Sera Tadkoro of Kansas is the individuleader after the opening round. Tadokoro fired a 68 (-4) to leads the 81-player field.
