DALLAS, Texas (Nov. 4, 2018) – The Wyoming tennis team closed out the 2018 fall season on Sunday at the Red and Blue Challenge in Dallas. The three-day event saw teams from SMU, UT-Arlington, Tulsa, Wichita State and Wyoming visit the SMU Tennis Complex.
"I thought we got after it today as a team," head coach
Dean Clower said. 'We have developed as a unit this fall and are playing Cowgirl tennis. The newcomers really brought it today and had the best day of the fall. The ladies will get a well-deserved day off tomorrow and we will continue the process on Tuesday."
Six of the seven Cowgirls were in action with a round of singles play. Junior
Ana Royo needed three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) in a good win over Arianna Capogrosso of Tulsa, followed by freshman
Ana Fernandez in a tough three set battle, 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (11-9), with Manon Meulenberg. Senior
Tessa van Der Ploeg fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, against Shura Poppe, while freshman
Mihaela Kaftanova dropped her match, 6-4, 7-6 (4), against Marina Davtyan. Fellow freshmen
Ida Krause and
Maria Oreshkina also closed out the day with a loss. Krause was beat by Megan Hopton, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (10-4), while Oreshkina retired down 4-1 against Martha Matoula.
Wyoming returns to action at the Hurricane Invite on Friday, January 11 in Tulsa, Okla.
