FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Oct. 5, 2018) – The Wyoming tennis team had a solid start to begin the first day of play at the Jon Messick Invite on Friday afternoon.
"We feel the ladies were very professional in how we went about our play in singles and the way we prepared for the day," head coach
Dean Clower said. "In doubles, we are showing glimpses of playing our way. We just need more practice time and video work."
The Cowgirls won five out of seven matches in singles action to begin the day.
Maria Oreshkina defeated Rafa Mora, 6-1, 6-2, followed by
Mihaela Kaftanova with a straight set win, 7-6, 6-3, against Sandra Keta.
Ana Fernandez won her only singles match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Madeline Doherty, 6-2, 6-3, while
Ana Royo beat Synclair Larson, 6-0, 6-4. The final victory came from
Ida Krause who beat Sarina Chhabra, 6-0, 6-2.
Fernandez and Royo were the only doubles team could come away with a win. They defeated Emma Corwin and Alyssa Grijalva, 6-4, but fell, 7-5, against Priscilla Palermo and Grijalva. Kaftanova and Oreshkina dropped a 6-3 contest against Emily Luetschwager and Stella Cliffe, along with a 6-3 loss against Palermo and Cliffe.
Play will resume tomorrow morning beginning at 11 a.m. MT at the University Tennis Complex in Fort Collins.
