HOUSTON, Texas – Cowboy swimming and diving is in second place at the
Western Athletic Conference Championships after three days of competition at
the Houston CRWC Natatrorium.
The Cowboys have a total of 498
points, just 28 points behind Air Force with 526 points. Grand Canyon is in
third with 379 points.
Wyoming started the evening strong
with multiple swimmers earning points for the Cowboys in the 400 individual
medley. Junior Wade Nelson claimed first with the second-fastest time in school
history of 3:45.40. Junior Ryan Ball placed sixth and senior Dylan Sether
placed seventh, with times of 3:50.96 and 3:53.70, respectively. Both marks
were the fastest of the season for each swimmer. Junior Eric Oleson led the way
in the B final with a time of 3:53.85 to place ninth overall.
Sophomore Jack Herron and junior
Slade Sheaffer boosted Wyoming's lead with top-eight finishes in the 200
freestyle. Herron placed third with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:36.97. Sheaffer
finished seventh with a season-best time of 1:38.25.
Junior Kyle White put forward one of his best
performances of the year with multiple season-best times. He touched the wall
in the 100 butterfly in 47.59, an NCAA 'B' cut time that earned him a
third-place finish. Junior Jacob Porter added to the point total, placing
seventh with a time of 48.32.
White later matched his first race with
another third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. His time of 53.68 was
another NCAA 'B' cut time. Senior Gabe Rooker was Wyoming's top finisher in the
100 breaststroke. He claimed second with a season-best time of 53.54. Sophomore David Murphy placed sixth with his own fastest time of the season of 54.90.
Wyoming wrapped up the night with a
third-place finish in the 400 medley relay. The team of Nelson, Rooker, White
and Herron clocked in at 3:12.06, the fastest mark of the season.
The Cowboys will conclude the WAC
Championships tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. MT with preliminary heats, and the
finals set to begin at 5 p.m. MT.
