HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (Oct. 6, 2017) -- University of Wyoming sophomore Erin Sargent led the Cowgirl golf team on Friday during the first round of the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Denver. Sargent is tied for seventh following the opening round after carding a career-best 70 (-2). UW is currently tied for eighth in the 14-team field with a first-round mark of 293 (+5).
 
"I am very pleased with how we played today in one of the more nationally competitive fields we will see all year," Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender said. "It was quite a drastic transition for us from Palm Desert with the weather and green speed, so that was a major point of focus for us."
 
The event, which lasts until Sunday, will continue Saturday morning with another 18 holes at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club, followed by the final 18 on Sunday. Wyoming and the rest of the field will tee off starting at 9 a.m. MT.
 
Senior Gabrielle Gibson was the next best finisher for Wyoming as she sits tied 19th with a 72 (E). Gibson recorded a birdie on each the front and back nine for her first-day score.
 
Redshirt freshman Caitlyn Skavdahl started out hot for the Brown and Gold on Friday morning. She is tied 38th and finished with a 74 (+2). Skavdahl also tied Sargent with a team-leading five birdies to begin the tournament. Sargent recorded two of her birdies within the last four holes to surge up the leaderboard.
 
Junior Sarah Hankins shot a 77 (+5) on Friday and is in 59th-place after the first round. Freshman Jordan Remley shot a 79 (+7) at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club. She recorded her lone birdie on the fifth hole, as both redshirt sophomore Kaylee and junior Megan Knadler shot an 81 (+9). Kaylee Knadler recorded three birdies on Friday, as Megan posted one.
