High School: Smiley was one of the top players in the State of Colorado. He is a two-time 5A Player of the Year in the State of Colorado. As a senior, He recorded over 24 points per game and nearly eight rebounds per night and had over threes assists and two steals per game. Smiiley led his team to the state semifinals. As a junior, he was named the 5A Player of the Year and led Windsor to a state championship. He was named the Coloradoan's Boys Athlete of the Year. As a junior, Smiley averaged 20.9 points per game, 7.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists. He also added 2.1 steals per game. In the state title game, Smiley added 25 points and 11 rebounds along with five assists. He was also named the Northern Conference Player of the Year.
