RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – The Cowgirls are off to a solid start at the Mountain West Women's Golf Championships at the Mission Hills Country Club.

Wyoming is in sixth place after shooting a collective 299 (+11) in Tuesday's opening round on the par-72, 6,286-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course.

Kiley Reisner, coming off her second individual victory of the season at last week's Bobcat Desert Classic, shot even 72 to lead the Cowgirls. The talented freshmen is tied for sixth.

"Today was a positive start and we put ourselves in good position with 36 holes to go," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We had some squirrely moments off the tee and on the greens, but I was very proud of their resilence to score."

Junior Elle Higgins (+1) and senior Meghan Vogt (+4), who are both grinding through injuries, are tied for 12th and 28th, respectively.

Sophomores Kira Reisner (+6) and Emerson Purcell (+7) rounded out UW's scoring.

"Elle was as steady as ever today and played mentally tough. Meg played scrappy and fought hard while Kiley I know would love to have a few putts back," Stender said. "Overall, I'm very pleased with our result and we will continue to stick to our process as the tournament goes on."

Grand Canyon's Alexis Vakasiuola and Colorado State's Kara Kaneshiro are tied for the individual lead after shooting 68 (-4). San Jose State and CSU are tied for first on the team leaderboard at +3, one shot ahead of reigning champion UNLV and conference newcomer GCU.

The Cowgirls will tee off in the second round between 11:10 a.m. and 11:50 a.m. Wednesday playing with Nevada and San Diego State. Fans can follow the live results here: MW Women's Golf Championships.
