LARAMIE, Wyoming (12/19/25) – The University of Wyoming wrestling team concludes the 2025 portion of its schedule this weekend. The Cowboys will participate in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. inside the Reno Events Center. The tournament will be streamed live on Flo.
Only a select portion of the roster will be present in Reno. Eleven Pokes are set to compete in
Isaiah Harrison (125),
John Alden (141),
David Saenz (141),
Cody Phelps (141),
Christian Herrera (141),
Antonio Avila (149),
Seamus Casey (165),
Lane Foard (174),
Westen Hoffschneider (174),
Gunner Henry (197) and
Winston McBride (HWT).
"A lot of these guys that are going to be wrestling don't have a lot of matches under their belt this year," head coach
Mark Branch said. "Most of them are really young, and the importance of getting a good match count when you're young can't be underestimated. The more experience you can get, the easier it is to make progress and learn."
Alden is the only one making the trip that does have a lot of experience, at least in this season. He's started each of Wyoming's duals and invitationals, owning a 1-6 overall mark.
The other 10 have served primarily as back-ups. Saenz competed at Western Wyoming and at the National Duals Invitational, but that was at 133 before
Luke Willochell seized that starting spot. Avila also has a pair of starts under his belt, but of the eight that remain, zero starts this season are present, however, that doesn't mean some in the future are out of the question.
"We have a few guys that are going (to Reno) to compete for a say in the season," Branch said. "They want to be in that lineup. So, it's a great situation to do that, as well."
Avila won the Reno Tournament of Champions title a season ago. Herrera also earned a place, taking fifth.
Following the trip to Reno, Wyoming takes a break for the holidays. The Cowboys will be back in action Jan. 3-4 in Coralville, Iowa, at the Soldier Salute Tournament.
