Springfield, MO. (Sept. 11, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowgirl golf squad opened up their season on Monday with the first two rounds of play at the MSU Payne Stewart Memorial hosted by Missouri State in Springfield, Missouri. After two rounds of play the Cowgirls sit in a 12th led by Tomine Bjerkelo who is tied for 10th heading into the final round of play.
"I thought we had a solid, confident start we just could not get the putts to drop in the first round. It was a marathon and mental grind and I'm proud that they stuck to their game." Head Women's Golf Coach Josey Stender said, "Great start for Tomine as a Cowgirl and Morgan's rally in round two was what we needed."
Playing in her first tournament as a Cowgirl, Tomine Bjerkelo put together a solid outing opening her day with a first round score of 70 (-2) on her way to finishing the day tied for 10th with a two-round total score of 144 (E). Morgan Ryan closed out her first two rounds of the new season with a total score of 149 (+5) putting herself in a tie for 34th with one round left to play. Kyla Wilde finished her day in 39th with a two-round total score of 150 (+6). The duo of Samantha Speilman and Jadan Gonzalez round out the Cowgirl lineup with each of them currently tied for 58th with a two-round score of 156 (+12).
In the team standings, the Cowgirls closed out the day in 12th with a score of 597 (+21) sitting four strokes behind 11th place Creighton. Austin Peay and Oral Roberts currently share the lead with each team posting a two round total of 576 (-2)
The Cowgirls will close out the MSU Payne Stewart Memorial tomorrow morning with the final round of play set to tee off at 8:30 a.m. MT.
