Columbia, Mo. (April 10, 2023) -- A late second-round rally by the Wyoming Cowboys on Monday afternoon lifted them up four places into a tie for ninth place out of 14 teams entering Tuesday's final round of the Missouri Tiger Collegiate Invitational. The Pokes fired a second round 282 (-6) after opening with a five-over par 293 in Monday's morning round. UW will tee off Tuesday morning sitting at 575 (-1) for the tournament and tied with Iowa State for ninth. UW is ahead of Big Ten teams Michigan and Minnesota, Mountain West Conference foe Nevada and Lipscomb of the American Sun Conference.
Leading the way for the Cowboys on Monday was junior
Jimmy Dales, who finished the first 36 holes at 141 (-3) to tie for 26th. Seniors
Tyler Severin and
Kirby Coe-Kirkham tied for 35th and 40th, respectively. Severin posted a 143 (-1), and Coe-Kirkham shot a 144 (Even) through the first two rounds. Sophomores
Patrick Azevedo, 147 (+3), and
Kristof Panke, 153 (+9) rounded out Wyoming's lineup.
"Today was a little bit of an adjustment for us," said
Joe Jensen, UW head men's golf coach. "We've been playing primarily on desert courses this spring and the course in Columbia is obviously different from those desert courses and has different grass. But the guys did a good job of bouncing back from our morning round and turning it around in the afternoon.
"We got below par as a team by the end of the day and our three upperclassmen, Jimmy (Dales), Tyler (Severin) and Kirby (Coe-Kirkham) all got to even par or under par for the day. If we can continue to trend in that direction in tomorrow's final round, we can finish up with a good performance here against a field of good teams."
The top ranked team in the field, No. 5 ranked Illinois, lived up to its ranking as it distanced itself from the field building a 15-stroke lead at 530 (-46) over second-place Missouri, which sits at 545 (-31). Marquette is in third at 553 (-23) and Kansas State is in fourth at 554 (-22). Those top four teams in the standings are all ranked among the top 60 teams in the nation according to the most recent Golfstat collegiate golf rankings. In addition to No. 5 ranked Illinois, Kansas State is ranked 25th, Missouri is ranked 52nd and Marquette is ranked 60th.
Fighting Illini teammates Jackson Buchanan and Adrien Dumont de Chassart are first and second in the individual standings at 128 (-16) and 132 (-12), respectively. Nicolas Evangelio of Marquette and Charlie Crockett of Missouri are tied for third at 133 (-11).
The Tiger Collegiate Invitational is being played at the The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. The course measures 7,221 yards and plays to a Par 72. The tournament will conclude Tuesday morning with a final 18-hole round teeing off in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., Central Time (7:30, Mountain Time).
